With solemnity and sorrow we remember the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. There was something particularly chilling about visiting this horrendous place on a gorgeous, sunny spring day. For me, it is a reminder that while there are horrible, unspeakable evils in this world, there is also unbelievable good. And there is hope. This goodness does not minimize, lessen, or compensate for the evil. It simply makes it a little easier to manage, makes life a little brighter. For it is hope and goodness that will bring about equality, justice, and peace. Most importantly, we must never forget the events that transpired here, the people who were brutally slaughtered. It is our responsibility to carry on their legacy, carry out their hope for the future, for they are not able to do it themselves. It is our purpose, our task, and our honor. Never forget.
This is an article about my dear friend's grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. I had the privilege of meeting her during my trip to Israel and am inspired by her courage and her extraordinary positivity. http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2015/01/auschwitz_liberation_auschwitz.html
