A decision has been made! The Iditarod Trail Committee announced yesterday that this year’s race will follow the Southern Route as planned. There might be some modifications though including for the Official restart on Willow Lake, depending on snow coverage. This is Anna Berington crossing Willow Lake during the 2018 Iditarod.

An Iditarod Fairbanks restart looks more and more like a real possibility considering the lack of snow and open water in Southcentral Alaska and other places along the trail. It would be the 4th Fairbanks restart after 2003, 2015 and 2017. Here, Mitch Seavey drives his team down the Chena River in 2017. Seavey ended up winning the 2017 Iditarod.

Considering the lack of snow in much of Southcentral Alaska, an Iditarod Restart in Fairbanks is a real possibility. The Iditarod will decide by February 3rd. We have gone with our groups to a Fairbanks Restart in 2015 and 2017, so we know what to expect. Here’s Aliy Zirkle and her team mushing on the Tanana River in 2017.
