Did you know? Cardigan Castle stands proudly overlooking the River Teifi, boasting a rich history that dates back centuries! Originally captured by Rhys ap Gruffydd in 1166, it was rebuilt in stone five years later in 1171.
Rhys ap Gruffydd, ruler of the kingdom of Deheubarth in south Wales from 1155 to 1197, faced challenges from King Henry II of England. Despite being forced to submit in 1158, Rhys didn't give up. After Henry's failed invasion of Wales in 1165, Rhys allied with Owain Gwynedd and reclaimed much of his lost territory.
In 1171, Rhys made peace with King Henry, solidifying his recent conquests. Their relationship remained amicable until Henry's passing in 1189. However, when Richard I took the throne, Rhys rebelled and attacked the Norman lordships around his domain, seizing several castles.
