Rusty Travel Trunk A cubicle escape artist determined to inspire others, both through the written word and with photographs, to get up and go explore this big world of ours.

As a traveler, I aim for both the unique and the cliché. I’ve done the day tours and the backpacking, the 5-star B&B and the hostel, street food and the fancy high tea, the beach resort and the mountain top cabin, the road trip and the long walks… If it is a fun, breathtaking, and/or beautiful experience, I don’t care if one million people before me have done it or just one person – I want to expe

rience it for myself. Rusty Travel Trunk is my way of sharing my adventures, both through the written word and in photographs. I hope they encourage people to go further than just sitting on a cruise ship or behind the gates of a resort – there is SO much to see and do! Just go!

Dawson's Fall visitor centre is the starting point for several hikes/walks. One such walk is to Wilkies Pools. I absolutely loved walking through the Goblin Forest (the dense greenery and twisty trees definitely felt like the setting for a fantasy story!). The pools themselves were a bit of a let down...I assume the water level was lower than usual? The saving grace for this spot was that if you are able to scramble up the rocks, you can get a great view of Mount Taranaki!

I also made the walk into a hike by taking one of the connecting trails. I ended up at another swing bridge where I found yet another great view of the volcano🤩

We rented e-bikes to do a taste of the 152km long Otago Rail Trail in South Island. From Poolburn Valley to Alexandra, it was a 46km ride mostly flat or downhill, with just a bit of uphill. There were a few historic sites, tunnels and bridges to explore as well as views galore, making me a very happy cyclist! Even though I would have loved blue skies to contrast with the golden hills, the cloudy day made it a much more pleasant ride temperature-wise as there was no shade at all.

About 10km from the end, I was shifting on the bike about to stop to take a photo....and my seat fell right off!! Turned out, the bolt had sheared off😮 I was so happy it didn't cause me to fall of the bike myself😵‍💫 We made a call to the company, they showed up pretty quickly with a new seat and we were off again!

Oamaru is a pretty town on South Island. I only spent a handful of hours here but kind wished I had a bit more time. But I did enjoy the Victorian architecture built with local cream-coloured stone and the steampunk elements scattered around the downtown core. Worth a visit if you are in the area!
