Today at the British Normandy Memorial. The first few hundred of 1,475 silhouettes are installed on the hillside above Gold Beach, Normandy. The installation, by British artist Dan Barton, will represent and honour the 1,475 British soldiers, sailors and airmen who lost their lives on D-Day.

The little girl in this photograph is Ruby Crane.....from the age of 3 years old Ruby walked blinded soldiers around a rehabilitation centre called St Dunstans at Brighton in Sussex, where Rubys Father was the head gardener....she knew they were blinded and just returned from the first World War.....wandering in the grounds she would take ahold their hand and ask them where they wanted to go ( individual workshops ) and guide them there....people were so affected by little Ruby walking the blind soldiers around they would send her dolls and toys as a thank you for all the support she was giving to the men and women affected by sight loss.....little Ruby was rewarded with a long life as she passed away in her late nineties, in 2011.
Ruby recalled..... " I always remember how my little hand seemed so small in their big hands....they were so pleased to have a child come and talk to them....it was something different away from the monotonous grind of not being able to see things, I think. "
Ruby was so popular that she featured on the front page of the St Dunstans first Annual Report for 1915/1916 and later Flag Day emblems incorporated a similar design that featured Little Ruby.

Such sad news to see that Carolyn Grace was Killed in a car crash in Australia on 2nd December 2022.

Carolyn took on operating and flying the Grace Spitfire, ML407, after her husband Nick Grace was killed in a car accident in 1988.

Nick, an engineer as well as a pilot, rebuilt the Spitfire over five years and first flew it in 1985. ML407 is an important aircraft, flying more than 176 operational missions during WWII including combat on D-Day over Normandy.

She was a hell of a woman; and someone I admired greatly. By all accounts, a “Spitfire” by nature.
This poem below seems apt.

“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew –
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

A sad story

John Kipling, son of our literary advisor Rudyard Kipling, died 107 years ago yesterday, in 1915, during the Battle of Loos. John was originally commemorated Dud Corner Loos Memorial, but now has a headstone at St Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery.

This army biscuit bears the sardonic inscription 'King and country need you and this is how they feed you'.

Issued to soldiers during the First World War as part of their emergency rations, these ‘hard tack’ biscuits could crack teeth if not first soaked or pulverised with a rifle butt.

War poet, Ivor Gurney, said of the biscuits: ‘The Army biscuits suit me. Of course they are too hard for my poor teeth, but hot tea and patience helps one past all.’

40 years ago today, 14th June 1982, Argentine forces surrendered and returned the Falkland Islands to British control.

Today we remember the 255 members of service personnel who died during the 74-day conflict.

40 years ago today, 14th June 1982, Argentine forces surrendered and returned the Falkland Islands to British control.

Today we remember the 255 members of service personnel who died during the 74-day conflict.

Following the conflict, we were asked by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to design and build a cemetery at ‘Blue Beach’ which is close to the settlement at San Carlos on East Falkland. This work was funded by the MOD and following construction by our staff the site was at first maintained by a third party but is now under our care.

The cemetery, known as San Carlos Military Cemetery, is also referred to as San Carlos ‘Blue Beach’ Cemetery and contains the graves of 14 casualties. It is also home to a war memorial which commemorates the 174 casualties who have no known grave.

Flags at half mast at Talbot House, in shock and remembrance. Another generation of youngsters are growing up in conflict and war. At Talbot House, child witnesses like Jeanne Battheu still tell about the suffering during the Great War. Let us spare a thought for the now one million Ukrainian refugees on the run, half of them children. We hope they too will find a safe heaven like Talbot House.
