Make some of your own history in Ouray.
St. Elmo Hotel, Ouray, circa 1900.
The St. Elmo Hotel opened in April 1898 in Ouray as a hotel for miners. The owner was Katherine “Kitty” O’Brien Heit. Kitty is standing here in front of the hotel, in its early days. The other woman, standing on the step, and the two men, are not identified, although it is likely that the man standing nearest to her is her husband, Joseph.
Kitty O’Brien arrived in Ouray in 1886 with her young son Freddy. She married Joseph Heit, an electrician, in 1889. She became the owner of the Bon Ton restaurant in about 1890. Using proceeds from her restaurant business, she started construction on the hotel, located next door to the Bon Ton, in early 1897, and opened it a year later.
The St. Elmo was known as the miner’s hotel, and her boarders called her Aunt Kitty. She was sympathetic to the miners’ union movement, and the hotel hosted meetings and social events of the Miners’ Union and the Western Federation of Labor. Kitty Heit died in May 1915 and the Ouray Herald published the following tribute:
“Her many acts of kindness and charity are legion and she was recognized as the miners’ friend. They were always welcome at her home whether flush with money or down and out. Her hotel came about as near being a real home for the lonesome and homeless as possible and everything was done for the comfort and pleasure of “her boys.” During her residence in Ouray she had been a regular “mother” to hundreds and no one could possibly be missed more than she.”
The hotel passed through various hands over the next decades. The current owners lovingly restored and maintain the hotel, and run it as nine-bedroom bed-and-breakfast inn. The outside appearance is much the same now as when this photo was taken nearly 120 years ago, and the hotel is furnished with many antiques. The site of the original Bon Ton Restaurant is now a patio, but the Bon Ton still offers fine dining in the basement of the hotel. St. Elmo Hotel is listed in the National Registry of Historic Buildings and is part of Ouray’s National Historic District.
