💡Japan Short Interesting Fact of the Day
Have you ever wondered if there was a reason the bullet train design looks so cool?
One of the greatest pride of Japanese engineering, the Shinkansen bullet train, was not born without problems.
30 years ago, when the powerful train entered a tunnel it dragged a mass of compressed air in front of it that when the machine left the passage it produced a loud horrifying noise: Boom! It was like an actual bullet was thrown in the air.
Neither the passengers nor the neighbors of the towns where the train was traveling were happy, so a solution had to be sought.
A team of engineers found the answer in the wild. The kingfisher, with its aerodynamic beak and dexterity to dive into the water without splashing a drop, was the solution.
The design of the bullet train changed, the ends moved to mimic the shape of the bird itself and the result was amazing. The annoying noise disappeared and improved the speed of the machine by decreasing the air resistance.
