New Cook representative appointed to Abta board
---------------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Cook’s legal expert Craig Stoehr has joined the Abta board, the association announced today.

He has taken the appointed position that had been occupied by Mike Hoban, Cook’s chief marketing officer, who left the business in May.

Stoehr is chief corporate officer and general counsel at Thomas Cook Group, and serves on the Group Executive Committee.

He is responsible for all group legal, governance, plc secretariat, mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, external and government affairs, sustainability, transformation and strategy and human resources.

Before joining Cook, Stoehr was a corporate partner of Latham and Watkins LLP, a leading international law firm.

Stoehr said: “I am pleased to have been given the privilege of joining the ABTA board, and look forward to participating in shaping and moving forward the very important ABTA policy agenda for the entire travel industry.”

Abta chief executive, Mark Tanzer, said: “The Abta directors are delighted to welcome Craig to the board.

“His experience of the operational and strategic management of a large vertically integrated airline, tour operator and travel agent will be very relevant to board discussions, as will his legal and strategy expertise in international jurisdictions.

“As the officer of Thomas Cook with primary responsibility for government affairs, Craig will be a great asset in helping to formulate and promote Abta’s policy agenda.”

Princess Cruises' Ocean Princess acquired by Norwegian,
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Princess Cruises’ mid-sized ship Ocean Princess has been acquired by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings for its newly acquired Oceania Cruises brand.

The 684-passenger ship will be renamed Sirena and join the Oceania fleet of identical sister ships - Insignia, Regatta and Nautica – in April 2016.

Sirena will undergo a 35-day, $40 million refurbishment the previous month in Marseille.

Norwegian president and chief executive, Kevin Sheehan, said: "The acquisition of Sirena provides measured capacity growth based on the proven platform of Oceania Cruises' highly regarded mid-size ships.

"Our belief in the Oceania Cruises brand and our commitment to its growing base of loyal guests were the rationale behind our decision to bring Sirena into the fleet."

Oceania president and chief operating officer, Kunal Kamlani, said: "The addition of Sirena opens up an entire array of new itinerary options for Oceania Cruises as we think about our deployment strategy.”

The inaugural season for Sirena will be released in late February 2015 with reservations opening on March 4.

Tui chief to meet with Egypt's President Sisi
-----------------------------------------------------------
Tui Travel deputy chief executive Johan Lundgren is to travel to Egypt to meet with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Lundgren will meet the president on November 17 as part of a delegation of 15 tour operators and industry figures and will explain that confidence in Egypt as a destination is improving for Tui customers.

The company’s customer numbers to Egypt have increased year on year for this winter.

Lundgren plans to discuss with the president how Tui can work more closely with the Egyptian authorities and other stakeholders to successfully grow the number of the operators’ customers back to the levels seen in previous years.

As a result of this stability, Tui UK&I was the first UK tour operator to return to Luxor earlier this year and will double the capacity next year when it introduces a flight from Manchester. Additionally, the UK and German source markets have also introduced the resort of Marsa Alam into their programmes.

Commenting on his forthcoming meeting with the president, Lundgren said: “We have long been the market leader to Egypt and our customers love going there.

"It has the attraction of being a year-round destination and we have partnered for many years with key suppliers to provide fantastic hotels and service, ensuring that we give our customers great experiences and keep our leadership position.

"In the UK, customer satisfaction levels are at the highest they have ever been and across the group, source markets that have not traditionally had Egypt in their programme are now featuring it with strong demand.

"We have had successive open and friendly dialogue with government and the tourism authorities over the years and I look forward to sharing our views and plans with the president.”

Ryanair fined €8.3 million for breaching French labour laws
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryanair faces an €8.3 million fine in France after a court ruled the carrier had breached the country’s labour laws.

An appeal court in Aix-en-Provence found the budget carrier guilty of paying workers under Irish contracts to avoid making French social security payments.

The court turned down the airline’s bid to have the decision overturned, after French authorities fined it for avoiding social security payments in the country by putting workers on contracts in Ireland.

The case involves 127 staff at Marseilles airport between 2007 and 2010.

Ryanair must now pay €8.1 million in damages to trade unions and the social security system in France and a €200,000 fine as a result of the ruling.

The airline had argued that as an Irish company operating aircraft based in Ireland it was entitled to employ staff on Irish contracts. It added that salaried staff had already made social security payments and paid taxes in Ireland.

Originally the airline was ordered to pay €8.8 million, including €4.5 million of backdated social charges, €3 million in pension contributions and €450,000 in unemployment charges.

Ryanair said a year ago that it would appeal against the decision, arguing that its staff had already paid social taxes and pension contributions in Ireland.

The airline argued that it should not have to pay such charges twice and lodged an appeal in June 2014. The French appeal court upheld the original decision, but reduced the amount of damages by €700,000.

Ryanair, which yesterday opened its third Scottish base in Glasgow, has yet to comment on the case.

Thomson Airways faces Christmas strike disruption

Thomson Airways faces a strike threat in the run-up to Christmas in a dispute over below-inflation pay rises involving cabin crew and pilot roster crew controllers.

The warning of passenger disruption from Unite, the UK’s largest union, came on the eve of today’s extraordinary annual general meeting of the airline’s parent company Tui Travel and its German sister company Tui AG to vote on merger plans.

About 30 crew controllers and their assistants, who arrange cabin crew and pilot rosters to Civil Aviation Authority regulations to cover for sick colleagues and any unforeseen circumstances, will be balloted from November 19 for strike action in a dispute over pay. The ballot closes on December 10.

Unite argues that the company rewards other sections of the airline’s 2,500 strong workforce well, but crew controllers have not benefited and their pay has been “severely eroded” in relation to the retail price index (RPI) rate of inflation since 2010.

The ballot follows a breakdown in negotiations held under the auspices of conciliation service Acas.

Unite regional officer, Kevin Hall, said: "This is an extremely profitable company that rewards other sections of its workforce very generously and our members in the crewing department see this day in, day out.

“We do not believe it is unreasonable to start to bring our members pay back in line with inflation and the early indications we have had from our members is that this ballot will be well supported.

“Our members earn relatively modest salaries ranging between £21,000 and £29,000-a-year for the skills and dedication they bring to their jobs which ensure the smooth running of the airline and getting passengers away on time for their well-deserved breaks.

“Passengers could face the real threat of disruption in the run to the Christmas holidays, if the crew controllers and their assistants walk out.

“We call on the management to get around the table and negotiate a fair and equable deal that will avert strike action over Christmas and the New Year.”

Thomson Airways issued a statement in response to the strike warning, which said: "Thomson Airways is surprised and disappointed to note that Unite intends to ballot our small team of crew roster controllers to consider strike action over the Christmas and New Year period, despite being offered what we believe is an extremely fair and reasonable pay deal. We feel this is premature as further talks are scheduled for next week.

"We would like to reassure customers that, should the strike action go ahead, we have contingency plans in place to ensure that there is no disruption to customers’ travel."
