Ryan Tippett is a free-lance guide with 12 years’ experience. He also spent 4 years as a Guide Training Instructor. He has attained the F.G.A.S.A. Level 3, SKS Birding, Lead Trails Guide and Marine guiding qualifications. Ryan has been a keen birder for 25 years and maintains an interest in all aspects of nature. Jana Beets-Tippett is married to Ryan. She has attained her F.G.A.S.A. Level 1 qualif
ication. For the past 5 years she has been working in the tourism industry. She has been a keen birder for almost 4 years and gained a love for birding from Ryan. Jana also leads the Pineapple tour. She does all the admin and helps with activities whenever needed. Together they make a good team. Activities include:
- BIRDING: Ryan has an extensive knowledge of the regions top birding spots such as - Falsebay Park, Hluhluwe River Floodplains, Nibela Peninsular, Mpempe Pan, Muzi Pan, Mkuze Game Reserve and more. With Ryan's knowledge and skill you have a great opportunity to find many of the regions special, rare and localised bird species such as: Rosy-throated Longclaw, African Pygmy Goose, Lesser Jacana, Pink-throated Twinspot, Neergaard's Sunbird, Senegal Lapwing, African Broadbill and many more!
- SPIDER SAFARI'S: This activity is offered in the evenings and is a great way to learn about the fascinating world of spiders. The spider safari is not meant to be scientific, but rather fun and educational. We often encounter rare and unusual spiders, providing a great opportunity for photography. This is a truly different bush experience!
- PINEAPPLE TOUR: Hluhluwe is home to pineapples. Take a tour with one of the most established farms in the area and learn everything there is to know about this amazing fruit. Learn about the 4 P’s: Preparation, Planting, Picking and Packaging! There will be Pineapple products for sale during the tour.
- FOSSIL WALK: Discover the ancient fossil history of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park. Join us as we take an easy walk along the scenic shores of False Bay. We will explore the fossilised coral reef and rich marine fossil deposits that abound on the shores of Africa’s largest estuary
- STARGAZING: Spend some time learning about the night skies, from the comfort of a chair or a comfy blanket. We cover the well-known Constellations, Stars and Planets that are visible at the time. We discuss other interesting celestial objects like the Jewel box, Magellanic Clouds, shooting stars, the Ecliptic etc. This is a special experience under the African night skies.
- PRACTICAL PLANTS AND THEIR USES: Learn about the medicinal, nutritional and practical uses of some of the local trees and shrubs. Learn to recognise these important plants. We will be taking a walk through sub-tropical Sand Forest at Hluhluwe River lodge. Sand forest supports some of Southern Africa’s most diverse plant communities.
