The Great Green Macaw was once prevalent throughout the entire Caribbean slope. However, since the 1970’s, their populations have declined and they are considered critically endangered with only about 1000 individuals left in the wild.

The is on a mission to protect and recover this endangered parrot population. The chick pictured here is part of their captive breeding program. Hatched April 14 to parents Valjean and Fontaine, it has grown healthy and strong and will be released, bolstering the wild population of these beautiful birds.

But before it goes, this chick needs a name!!

We want to fill you in on some of the best beaches around in Costa Rica. 5 of the best, in fact.

1. Playa Uvita, Costa Ballena, Puntarenas. This area is called Costa Ballena – or the Whale Coast – for the large number of migratory whales spotted here. Playa Uvita, sitting in the middle of Ballena, is literally known as the Whale’s Tail due to sedimentation that created a sand bridge between Uvita Bay and the mainland.

2. Playa Guiones, Nosara, Guanacaste. For decades, this area remained known only to a select few traveling surfers and yogis. As word spread of its natural beauty, crazy good waves, and jaw-dropping biodiversity, visitor numbers increased and the town evolved into the holistic yoga, surfing and lifestyle Shangri-La that it is today.

3. Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio, Quepos. Manuel Antonio is located off of Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, and famous for having one of the most popular national parks in the country. It’s got TONS of wildlife, and a litany of activities for you adventure-seekers. Playa Espadilla is a large public beach that’s located near the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park. So, it’s also a great place to stop and unwind if you’ve been wildlife exploring.

4. Playa Santa Teresa, Nicoya Peninsula. One of several beaches in this town, Playa Santa Teresa is a broad and long expanse of white sand edged by jungle. It’s the perfect walking beach – shelves of driftwood dot the shoreline along with baby crab friends that make their home in the sand. At low tide, you can even spot some tide pools amongst rock formations. Really, there’s nothing like lounging in a hammock here and listening to the sound of crashing waves.

5. Puerto Viejo, Limón. It’s amazing how different the Caribbean side of the country can feel from the Pacific. It’s got this bohemian-chic vibe happening, with a town where you get around via bicycle and innovative food creations like beer and chocolate. It’s the quintessential Pura Vida destination.

Meet the jaguarundi, one of the six species of wild cats we have here in Costa Rica! Have you ever seen one?

They’re a fascinating species. Here's a few fun facts about them:

1️⃣ Unlike most cats in the region, Jaguarundis do not have spots

2️⃣ They can reach a speed of around 40mph

3️⃣ If you hear a bird-like chirp, it might be a Jaguarundi! They can produce up to 13 different sounds.

In case you’re curious, the other wild cats you can spot in Costa Rica are Ocelots, Margays, Jaguars, Pumas, and Oncillas.

Step into the Devil's lair and witness the raw power of nature at the Pailon del Diablo - a staircase leading to a river mouth that translates to the "Cauldron of the Devil."

Just a 30-minute hike from the town of Baños in Ecuador, this waterfall is made up of three cascading falls, with the highest reaching 100 meters. The water is so fierce, it creates a natural vortex, and the turquoise color and 23-degree Celsius temperature make it look super inviting… despite, you know...the whole devil’s mouth thing.

If you’re willing to get wet, follow the cave-like trail uphill through narrow openings for an extraordinary vantage point of the falls.
