Why do some male salmon and trout develop a kype - the large hook shape on the lower jaw featured on this 12 pound brown trout?

A possible purpose for the kype was suggested by Charles Darwin in 1910. Darwin proposed that the kype is the product of sexual selection. He viewed the kype as a tool for fighting among males, functioning either like a shield or a sword! Its function - to establish a hierarchy among males, those with larger kypes being dominant over animals with smaller types.
