The Sad Haunt of Lady Arbella Stuart
The Tower of London is said to be the most haunted building in the country. Hardly surprising really. It’s nearly 1000 years old. Hundreds of prisoners were held here. Some were tortured. Others were executed. Or simply murdered.
It’s a right House of Misery. Why on earth does anyone want to visit it I wonder?
There are countless stories of royal ghosts. Queen Anne Boleyn, Queen Catherine Howard, Lady Jane Grey have all manifested out of the ether several years after they were beheaded. So they say.
As a London tourist guide I need to have a couple of ghost stories up my sleeve whenever I lead tours in the Tower. But I used to find it hard to summon up much enthusiasm. After all, they were just stories, weren’t they?
Until I read a newspaper interview with the Resident Governor of the Tower of London and his wife who lived inside the Tower fortress.
What this journalist reported was utterly convincing and changed my mind about the existence of ghosts.

Shortly before Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France he thought he’d have a suitably imposing statue made of himself. He got much more than he bargained for.
You can see the nude Napoleon yourself at Apsley House which is also known as No. 1 London: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/#?page=1&place=Apsley%20House&mp=false&fe=false

What about your sex life Lord Leighton?
Leighton House in London was built for the acclaimed Victorian artist, Frederic Leighton. He was much travelled which influenced the decoration of this beautiful house. The Arab Hall is the star piece.
Leighton was one of the most famous Victorian artists. Yet we know little of his private life.
I find this most frustrating!
Leighton House is now a museum in West London. https://www.rbkc.gov.uk/museums/

Gandhi came Here - and saw the difference.
In 1884 a group of devout Anglican graduates from Keble College, Oxford were shocked to see the poverty and degradation in London’s East End. They founded a large ‘settlement’ called Oxford House with individual study rooms and run on the lines of their old college halls. From there they used their education and wealth to help the local boys and young men. They provided education, training facilities, legal advice and exercise facilities. This enabled many to escape a well-trodden route to prison or early death.
Repton Boxing Club still thrives nearby but it was here, at Oxford House in Bethnal Green where it started.
In 1931 Gandhi turned up to see how these philanthropic Oxford graduates were making a difference to the local men’s lives. He gave an impromptu speech from one of the windows, addressing 3000 people.

Mohamed Al Fayed buried in the wrong place
Mohamed Al Fayed was once rich, owned Harrods, and socialised with the British Royal Family. But when Princess Diana was killed in the Paris car crash with his son Dodi everything changed. He began to have some rather strange ideas.
