Meet Nic, Summer 2014 Intern, Research and Development

My name is Nic Zhang and I'm currently studying aeronautics at Stanford University.

My role at LPA was to evaluate and improve the performance of our classifier designs. The programming aspect of my work involved developing algorithms to track coal particles while on the mechanical side I designed housing for our particle image velocimetry apparatus using Solidworks. The best thing about working at LPA was this start-up-like environment where everybody got a great deal of responsibility and opportunities to learn. With no prior experience in Python or the specific flow I dealt with, I was able to pick them up quickly with the help of my supervisor, Xiaoning, and hit the ground running. Challenges were thrown at me on a day-to-day basis. It was an exhilarating experience.

The people at LPA were also a great surprise. Everyone was welcoming and helpful. The interns had a tight-knit community and was very quickly integrated with the full-time staff. We had weekends outings, world cup viewing parties, and organized sports events. There was never a dull day. I couldn't have asked for more.

Although I'm studying aeronautics now, I am keeping my options wide open for the future. At LPA, I was able gain insight into a lot of different aspect of an engineering firm. Working here at LPA was such a great experience that I think I'll spend some time working after my master's instead of finishing up a PhD right away. Having the work experience at LPA, I'm more confident and prepared for such a choice.

Meet Christina, Summer 2014 Intern, Corporate Development

My name is Christina Wang and I study Economics and Statistics at Amherst College in Massachusetts. During the Summer 2014, I was a Corporate Development Intern and worked closely with the core team to help formulate LPA's growth and expansion strategies through strategic planning and financing. I absolutely loved my summer at LPA. I was given projects that were interesting and engaging, and my deliverables were important in forming the Company's future development. My supervisor trusted me from day one, and I took ownership of my work throughout the internship. The team was also extremely helpful and supportive. I felt comfortable asking anybody questions, whether technical, sales, or otherwise, and I could expect an informative answer. I learned a tremendous amount of exciting things about the industry, and about corporate finance/development in general. I enjoyed working on projects that needed collaboration across different departments. It was really cool meeting new people and learning about interesting ideas everyday. I also went on a few trips to talk to investors and potential partners. Besides that, the prairie trip was also a highlight of the summer.

Currently, I am continuing my study in Economics at Amherst. Having interned at LPA, I now have a better idea of what I want to pursue after college. The exposure to finance and strategic planning made me confident about a career in business.

Meet Arnab, Spring 2014 Co-Op, R&D

My name is Arnab Chanda, I am a PhD student in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at University of Alabama, USA. I was working as an Research and Development Engineer at LP Amina, Beijing. Working with LPA was awesome, and its actually impossible for me to summarize my experiences in few sentences. I worked with the smartest people in China and U.S. in challenging projects, made my best friends, partied and travelled so much that I would have never imagined in my life, fell in love with the city, food and culture. I remember, we interns used to jokingly call the LPA office as our first home, as it was the common point for all our meet ups and trips.

From a professional standpoint, I consider myself very lucky to work with LPA, it just happened, and it changed my life. I am someone who is extremely obsessed with research and I always used to see myself as a professor later in my career. LPA has made me reconsider my goals, now I feel like I should do research in a industry post my PhD or probably start up something new. Being in China opened my eyes to how dynamic the technology and research sector is, and there is so much to contribute out there. In future, I feel like when I will connect back the dots, LPA will be a big chapter in my life. To wrap up, I want to to send my best wishes and regards to my friends and colleagues in LPA and tell them that I miss you guys a lot and please keep in touch! :')

Meet Cory!!!

Hello! I’m Cory Combs, originally from California, USA. I graduated in 2009 from Stanford University, where I received my BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering. In my final year at Stanford, I became interested in eventually heading to China, specifically in developing pollution abatement technologies. This interest developed through a variety of influences, particularly courses in air pollution and energy efficiency and a short introduction course to Mandarin Chinese.

At LP Amina, I am currently doing a co-op in Research and Development. I am interested primarily in developing and prototyping new technologies, and as part of RD here this is exactly what we do. I am not an engineer who would be happy tweaking a widget on CAD his whole career, my passion is invention and pushing the boundaries of possibility. In my short time here, I have already participated in inventing a new process, which in less than two weeks is already turning into real test hardware. My experiences thus far at LP Amina have been very positive. I love the “get it done” spirit here; if there is a problem to solve in R&D, we don’t spend weeks in meetings theorizing. Instead, we collaboratively design, prototype, and test with rapid turn-around times not found in most larger companies, but with more resources available than most startups. Overall, my initial experience at LP Amina has been everything I had hoped for coming to China.

Joining us for our fall 2014 internship program is Nicole McKay who will be staying with us for 3 months as Marketing Intern. We asked her to share a brief introduction about herself and her experiences here at LP Amina.

Hi, I am Nicole McKay and I am a stereotypical third culture kid born to a Chinese mother and an Australian father. I have lived in China for most of my life and truly think of it as home. I joined the marketing and PR field because of my background in theater and interest in language, it also doesn’t hurt that I talk too much, so I might as well use my chatty habits for something productive. My hobbies outside of school and work consist mostly of gaming. I was always a tomboy as a child so videogames were an inevitability. I also enjoy soccer and spend my time after work on Thursdays with my co-workers playing soccer. Speaking of co-worker, the people at LP Amina create one of the best environments to foster creativity and learning, my experiences here have been nothing but positive. With great responsibility and thought provoking work the internship program really helps provide an interesting and genuine work experience. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to put their best foot forward when joining their future career.
