On this day in 1886 Coca-Cola went on sale for the first time, sold as a tonic. To honor that day, May 8 has been named National Have a Coke Day... which is perfect timing for this little video of an animated jukebox Coca-Cola bank.
Tom Perkins, owner of Perkins Wood and Glass "The Shop" in Gardner, Illinois, has quite a collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia in his shop. He demonstrated this fun bank when we visited this weekend during the Illinois Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor festival.

We spent the day exploring some of the Missouri Ozarks. We roughly followed the trail in the Explore West Plains visitors guide for the eastern historic mills. We loved seeing the mills and the drive between them. Winding country roads through grassy hills dotted with grazing cattle, the Mark Twain National Forest thick with pine trees. But our favorite stop of the day was hike on the Greer Spring Trail down to the gorgeous spring.

We found this treasure in the Holland Museum. Crafted by an old sailor in the Netherlands around 1905, he hand-carved each of the horses on the miniature carousel.

We spent one full day (and two nights) at Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio last summer…and it wasn’t nearly enough time. We started on a short morning hike. Everything along the trail was gorgeous: bridges, waterfalls, rocks, streams.
When we finished that hike, we had the option to circle back to our starting point or keep moving ahead. We kept moving. Over rocks, behind waterfalls, up rocky steps, down rocky steps, along dirt trails.
So many beautiful natural features, including the Devil’s Bathtub (video below). I don’t know if we’ll make it back there this summer, but it's definitely on our list for a future visit. There are several more trails to explore.

Did you know the Natchez Trace Parkway is the 7th most visited National Park? The park averages only 800 feet wide, but it extends 444 miles!
The road roughly follows the original Natchez Trace, coming very near or crossing over the original foot path in several places. The drive is relaxing, as no commercial traffic is allowed on it, and the speed limit is only 45 to 50 mph.
We drove the entire trace last week, from Nashville, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi, stopping at many historic sites along the way.
Thinking we were too late for fall colors, it wasn’t bad. Colors were past peak but still beautiful.
We've been to many corn mazes in the past, but this was our first visit to a sunflower maze. The Kansas Maze is incredible!

The National Park Service was founded 107 years ago today. In 2019, just a few months before the Covid lockdowns, we made our first trip to Yellowstone, arguably the very first national park in the world. The first thing we did was head to Old Faithful, which was set to go off in 20 minutes. Did we get lucky!

After taking our granddaughter last month to the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, Illinois, she asked to also visit Lincoln's Tomb. Before we went inside to pay our respects, she wanted to follow tradition and rub the nose of the Lincoln bust outside of the memorial. She tried...

A waterfall in Visit Richmond - Indiana? Who knew? In 1854 Tim Thistlewaite dammed the West Fork of the Whitewater River to create a dam and the water power needed to run his sawmill. The result was Thistlewaite Falls.
We visited Thistlewaite Falls last week on our trip to Richmond. The waterfall no longer provides water power, but it's awesome to see and cools off a lot of kids in the summer (adults, too, no doubt). It's also a great spot for fossil hunting. I brought three home with me (yes, it's allowed).

Unsuspecting visitors to Vandalia in Discover Downstate Illinois will be taken aback when they come across a giant dragon that breathes real fire. Really, it's there. We saw the #kaskaskiadragon with our own eyes when we visited the area a couple of weeks ago. The proof is in the video.
Happy National Bowling Day! How often do you get to bowl in a mansion? We did, last week. The Historic Seelye Mansion in Abilene, Kansas, has a bowling lane in the basement. The self-resetting lane, which resembles Skee Ball, was bought at the 1904 World's Fair. When you tour the 11,000 square-foot mansion, you get to roll three balls on the lane. So fun!
