Russian trenches, Hindu Kush 2002

You gotta train every day….I never forgot those words from the selection chief instructor.

Even whilst deployed overseas in 50 degree heat….only make sure you carry a pistol and a radio.

Not just for your physical fitness but to give you an outlet, release the tension.

Back in the early days it wasn't yet the wild west, still there were moments but the release rarely came.

No adrenaline fuelled contacts with the enemy just months of tension, stress and fatigue.

Still you gotta train every day.

Whatever that looks like for you….mind and body, train every day.

TBT Operation Raleigh selection weekend 1985

I caught sight of a poster advertising a round the world expedition at Waterloo station.

It set me off on a journey to the Army, expeditions and a life of global adventures.

I might have missed it or looked the other way.

Gets me thinking that things are meant to be, that all this is worked out for you?

I like the notion that our souls write a contract before we take our place on Earth and our job in life is to fulfil that contract.

I know that's deep but what do you say?

Happy Armed Forces Day 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

It’s fair to say the joining the Army was one of the best calls I made as a young bloke and there were few. It provided an opportunity to expand my horizon and not to fall into a path of a mundane and predictable outcome.

I met some of the best men I know, we shared a common adversity and grew stronger in the process.

I was by far a model Soldier, my youthful and somewhat rebellious attitude led to spells in Military detention including the infamous glass house at Colchester.

Still it all worked out thanks to a UKSF legend who gave me a second chance.

Years later I joined his mob and as my former colleagues joke achieved one of the greatest regains known to any that have ever worn Military uniform..

It shows that what ever you decide to put your energy into and fully commit to you can achieve.

Will raise a 0% beer to all my former colleagues , those serving on ops and those no longer with us.

RIP Warriors ⚔️🇬🇧⚔️

1989 Operation Raleigh Zimbabwe

Klepper canoe recce on Lake Kariba with Sgt Major Newton of the Zimbabwe Parachute Regiment.

Paddling across the lake you couldn’t help but notice the large Zambezi crocodiles and hippos eyeing up easy prey. The Kleppers weighed down with kit, sat 4” above the water line and we were firmly in their sights.

What I loved about these expeditions is the philosophy of just work with what you’ve got and make it happen. A clear objective with no fuss, just get on with it. Unshackled by the convention of the green army it’s also a guiding principle of UKSF.

Trips like these was what I joined the Army for. I was lucky to be there having just been released from Military corrective training at the infamous glass house in Colchester.

As a 24 year old Sapper I was the youngest project leader on the expedition and the only ordinary rank, a fact I only told them of at the end. Had blokes saluting me for weeks and even got an RSM to brace up.

A dream job supporting the development of young people on an adventure that’s still to be repeated. great people and remains one of my fondest memories.

TBT Kuwait 91’

33 years ago we arrived in the desert for a summer you'd never forget.

Working in 50 degree heat we trawled through the battlefield and minefields searching for unexploded ordnance.

Making up charges and ring mains that would have your WO2’s hair stand on end.

Blokes blowing up 500lb bombs and just crouching down behind the nearest wagon.

Lads on tour.

Making bad situations tolerable through humour and initiative, just like we always did.

Some crazy s**t happened that summer, you wouldn’t believe it, it needs to be written down.

RIP the lads who never made it home.

Afghanistan 2002

After a challenging journey to visit an American callsign located in a medevial fortress close to the Pakistan border.

A white knuckle ride like no other.

Hours spent scanning the horizon and scoping out every mud walled building dotted along dusty and often deserted streets.

Then catching eyes with scattered groups of young children playing happily in the dirt as we creep through villages and previous hunting grounds of the enemy.

We get back to base drenched in a sand filled sweat that's reached every part of your body.

It's in these moments all you have is the group.

You need these people as much as they need you. There's nothing you can do here by yourself in a land where safety and security are short lived.

…and some days I'd give anything to be back there.

Build up range package before moving onto live 2 man and 4 man contact drills.

Nails environment and no better training ground for what was to come.

High temperatures, limited cover, getting ripped to shreds by the ground and
heart rate red lining.

There’s a reason they say train hard fight easy.
