Autumn training vibes in Saariselkä. Training continues here and in a month we are already starting first tours with our clients.

Last monday we had training day for our staff in Saariselkä kennel. Jenna Ahomaa was showing and teaching different massage and streching techniques. First half of the day was more theory, learning different muscles and how they work. Afternoon we went out to see how dogs should move in different gait. This is very important skill to learn in our job, so we can prevent injuries and take best possible care of our dogs.

The well-being of dogs is important, but at least as important is the well-being of the staff. Human emotions and behavior are easily reflected in the behavior of dogs.

The number of staff in kennels varies according to the seasons. During the winter season, we need staff the most. We are happy that so many people come back season after season, but every year we also need new team members.

Often when discussing sled dog kennels, the well-being of dogs comes up. This is a very good thing because, as with many others, there are many types of companies in this businness.

For every sled dog company, the goal should be a healthy dog. It should be everyone's goal, but the ways leading there may be different. Things can be done in different ways, but they are still not right or wrong.

Taking care of the well-being of dogs also means continuous development and planning. Kuukkelilampi kennel has renovated dog kennels and cages this summer. There are plans to build new cages next summer.

This week you get to follow the life of the Kuukkelilampi kennel, not only the dogs, but also the sheeps, ducks and cats.

Breeding dogs can sometimes also be challenging. The period when female is in heat may be delayed or may pass unnoticed. In all females, the time when they are in heat is not equally clearly visible. And it can also be possible that mating just doesn't work out for some reason. Maybe the combination chosen by human is not the best one, who knows.

Luosto has had some misfortune with breeding, but now luck has turned! There are two females pregnant and puppies are expected to be born soon.

This week it's Luosto's turn to tell how they're doing, and maybe we'll also get to see how big the future mothers, Horn and Vanilla, already are.

We usually buy dogs either individually or a few individuals together. This summer we have bought all the dogs from one kennel and most of them have been placed in Matinvaara kennel. The dogs have settled in nicely and the information provided by the previous owner about each dog as an individual helped a lot.

The youngest dogs in the purchased pack are about six months old and the oldest almost ten years old. The dog pack includes dogs of all ages. Can you imagine a family without a grandmother or grandfather?

This week you will be able to follow Matinvaara's news and maybe meet these new members of the pack as well.

Dog breeding should be planned and controlled. It is important to choose the right individuals for breeding, but at least as important is it to consider individuals that do not want to be used for breeding. For example, individuals with hereditary diseases are not used for breeding.
The only way to permanently ensure that some selected individual is not used for breeding is castration or sterilization.
At the Rovaniemi kennel, about 31% of all the dogs have either been castrated or sterilized. About the same number of males and females. This week you get to follow the life at Rovaniemi kennel.

In summer, kennels have plenty of time for puppies. Breeding dogs is important and should always be planned. Individuals used for breeding should be healthy and in good condition. The dog must be age-appropriate, for example, bi***es under two years old are not used for breeding. Also, the character and body type of the dog affect the breeding decision.

We do breeding work between kennels, but sometimes we also buy new dogs for breeding.
This summer we have bought a male for breeding in Kuukkelilampi kennel. His name is Scott and maybe this week we'll find out more about him, it's Kuukkelilampi's turn to update here on social media.

When dogs are able to run freely, it also enables encounters between different individuals. Especially old, wise dogs can teach young dogs how to behave in a pack by their example. This week you get to follow the life of the Luosto kennel, where the dogs can run free in the fenced area in the kennel.

You can visit our kennel in Luosto, just pop-up on Monday to Friday at 12:00. No need to do reservation before.

In addition to movement, contact with other dogs is also important when dogs run freely. When running free, dogs get to carry out species-typical behavior with each other. Free-running is very important for puppies and young dogs. You learn to run by running. In addition, running free develops coordination excellently. It is important to note that free-running is carried out in a fenced, safe area. This week you can follow the activities of Rovaniemi kennel and there the fenced running yard is outside the actual kennel area.

This picture is from last summer, but we have got puppies also in this summer and it is possible to meet puppies, visit the kennel and have a walk with huskies.
