🕊️ Remembering February 20, 2010: A Testament to Madeiran Strength & Unity

History is important! Today we honor the memory of one of Madeira's darkest days, when nature's fury brought unprecedented devastation to this beautiful island. The floods and landslides that struck that fateful Saturday morning claimed 47 precious lives, left some missing, and forever changed countless families.

But amidst the darkness, the true spirit of Madeira shone brightest. Hundreds of volunteers, young and old alike, worked tirelessly for over a month to rebuild what was lost. They cleaned homes and businesses, comforted the elderly, and brought smiles to children's faces during those difficult days. Their motto was simple yet powerful: "we are the difference maker."

The tragedy brought forth the largest wave of solidarity in recent memory, uniting not just Madeirans but people across Portugal and Europe. While the material damage was immense, the human spirit proved stronger. Volunteers gave not just their time and effort, but their hearts – cleaning streets, serving at RG3, and offering comfort to those who lost everything.

As we reflect on this somber anniversary, we remember not just the devastation, but the extraordinary courage and compassion that followed. This day remains etched in our collective memory as both a reminder of nature's power and the incredible strength of the Madeiran people.

To those we lost, we remember you. To those who helped rebuild, we thank you. And to all of Madeira, we stand together, stronger than ever.
