Accommodation when tracking gorillas
In terms of accommodation, each country offers great places to stay. Here are a few of our recommendations:
Rwanda
My favorite luxury accommodation is Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge because it is high up on hill, has great views, cozy rooms with fireplaces and amazing service. I have also visited Virunga Lodge which is a beautiful eco-lodge but an hour’s drive from the trek starting point. When you already have to be up and ready at 6am adding an hour drive to that is not insignificant. For a medium budget the best choice is Mountain Gorilla Lodge. It does not claim to be more than it is but it very convenient and the rooms are quite spacious. For the more modest budget Le Bamboo was perfectly comfortable

For Uganda my favorite option is Buhoma Lodge. It is an eco-lodge with a rustic, comfortable feel and is one of two properties actually inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The lodge is set into a hill with beautiful views of the forest. Probably the most luxurious option in the Bwindi area is Gorilla Forest Camp but this is not one of my favorites because it is quite dark but it is well-designed and has great service. For a modest budget Traveler’s Rest in Kisoro has simple, comfortable rooms and was a frequent stop for Diane Fossey when she traveled through Uganda. It is about an hour’s drive from the Bwindi park gate.
Mountain Gorillas

To see Lowland Gorillas our recommended trip would take you to Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the north of the Congo near the border with Gabon. Odzala-Kokoua is one of Africa’s oldest national parks. It covers 1,360 million hectares of pristine rain forest and is an integral part of the Congo Basin ecosystem. Protected within its boundaries are forest elephant, forest buffalo and 12 primate species including globally-significant populations of western lowland gorilla. One of the great features of gorilla trekking in Republic of Congo is that the cost of the permit is included in the trip and you have access to the gorillas over two days. While in Odzala you will travel with Wilderness Safaris and stay at Lango and Ngaga Camps.
Whatever country you choose gorilla trekking is guaranteed to be a moving and life-changing experience.

The volcanoes national park in the Republic of Rwanda ( Parc National de Volcans) lies along the Virunga Mountains. The park has got 8 ancient volcanoes volcanoes, which are shared by within the Republic of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. With just a short two hour drive from Rwanda’s capital of Kigali, the park is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences. While a visit to the mountain gorillas is often at the top of visitor, the dramatic landscape also offers thrilling hiking and visits to the fascinating golden monkeys. It was first gazetted in 1925, as a small area bounded by Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mikeno volcanoes, intended to protect the gorillas from poaching. It was the very first national to be created in Africa. Today, it is one of Rwanda’s conservation epicenters, where many non-profit organizations base their operations. Visitors can pay homage to the legendary scientist and gorilla advocate Dian Fossey with a hike to her tomb or a visit to the Dian Fosse Gorilla Fund that continues her legacy of research and advocacy to this day.

The near by city of Musanze is One of the largest cities in and hosts most of the tourists visiting the world famous mountain gorillas. It long been the base point for gorilla visits and is cradled against a stunning backdrop of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes. The city is rich is cultural tourism opportunities, caving, birding and fishing on the nearby lakes. The city is also only a 45- minute drive away from Gisenyi and the stunning Lake Kivu. Tracking the endangered mountain gorillas on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes is a magical experience. Hike through mountain forests to experience these gentle creatures or make your way through airy bamboo forests to find the charming Golden Monkeys.

When you are visiting the fascinating Volcanoes park Musanze can simply be accessed by public transport starting from Gisenyi or Kigali on the very day of your tracking.

It really does not matter when you want to tour the gorillas of Rwanda, you can see the gorillas all year round. Most visitors take on the months of June to September and then December to February since this is the time of the year where it does not rain heavily. During the peak season, July and August, the permits are always on high demand. Therefore, booking the trip 3 months to your trekking date is very important.

Mountain climbing, the caves, gorilla trekking , the twin lakes of Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are a must see in when you Visit the Republic of Rwanda. The mystery, which also makes it magical, is how a lake flows into another lake. As it happens, Lake Burera is almost 150 meters higher than Lake Ruhondo. Going around the lakes is quite a journey and to be able to see both lakes, especially the part where one lake flows into another requires an aerial view.In order to see the twin lakes, you can join the safari with visiting Volcano National park for gorilla tracking. The terrain to the starting point of gorillas tracking is rough, rocky and difficult to maneuver but with a 4x4 car, it shouldn’t be a problem. From Virunga lodge, one can see the mountains, Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo and Bisoke.

To get a better view of the two water bodies, drive towards town and enter a dusty road, some 20km to a small trading center of Kirambo to see where the water that goes into Mukungwa comes from. Standing over a bridge, you will notice from afar the difference between the two lakes in terms of levels and also find out that the water comes from a swamp.

The swamp that is full of ridges produces black water, which looks like oil and joins with laterite colored water and then flows into Lake Burera via Mukungwa dam. The scenery around the lakes is spectacular; the land is terraced and surrounded by farmlands. In the middle of these two lakes, there are islands with inhabitants whose primary occupation is fishing. Visitors to the lakes can also take canoe rides while enjoying the sight of different species of birds

Day 7 on our Rwanda adventures Although its Gorillas that often steal the show in Volcanoes National Park, the endemic Golden Monkey are striking primates with their bright orange-gold fur contrasting the green rainforests of the Virunga Mountains, and a real treat for the eye. Large and well habituated groups mean that the quality of sightings here is superb. Great photos and memories are to be had visiting these playful creatureshttp://www.rwandagorillasafaritours.com/
