BarnFest Scavenger Hunt

We’ve got something cooking, guys!

BarnFest 2017 will happen, it’s just a refugee from temporal restraints. This warping of time and space has of course had an impact on the shape of the event itself: primarily, the event will last a week — and challenges will be more difficult to reflect that. BarnFest 2018 will happen in September and as far as we can say should be a more traditional event (unless of course the weeklong format is more awesome and such and so forth).

This is a pre-announcement announcement! Expect dates to be announced at the announcement, which will be soon — end of April.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we regret to inform the adoring public and goonish owlkin that have come to follow the BarnFest Scavenger Hunt page since its inception that the 4th annual BarnFest Scavenger Hunt Massacre (with four part harmony) of 2017 will be....
..a private event.

If I don't know you or if four people can't vouch for you, then hard luck.

In the past year, too many local people have experienced hardship due to a misguided overeager group of individuals whose vigilante cause has served only to upset the lives of the good and the poor in favor of the land-owning wealthy; and by dint of their bourgeois exclusivity (and a destructive pursuit of profit over people), they have ceded decency in favor of an unrealistic portrait of this unrealistic culture in this unrealistic town.

This event will be private, with strict control over invitation.

It's all on this morning!

Put yourself into the mind of the list makers; and, after realizing it won't scrub off no matter how long a shower you take, try and anticipate the hunt!

You're all torpedoes homing in on the final destination: glory. And a pittance in dollar bills. And perhaps the loss of self-respect inherent with some of these tasks.

But in the end, you've become an initiate! You will have enacted a ritual that recontextualizes the entire realm known as Ojai, as Ventura, as your mind... you've stretched back the veil of reality and turned what is normally a menial task (driving down the street, crossing at a crosswalk, drinking beer from the tap) into an act of revolution.

Bathe in it. It is yours to enjoy.

Get ready, folks.

Fill that gas tank, drink plenty of water. Come up with a theme and dress the part! (I really want to see a team scour the Ojai Valley dressed as robots or sailor moon)

Make sure you've got a map, it might prove useful! Wear sturdy shoes, fit yourself in the finest bespoke tinfoil hat, and aim for 5th place with the best of them.

Kick off at 10am tomorrow, arrive a little early and be the first kid on your block to have the list.

Two things, oh intrepid hunters:

1. Bring a chair! Not only will this be good for general chair purposes, but also because we'll be wanting you to set up a chair along a certain thoroughfare at a certain time;

2. Themes are encouraged! While BarnFest has had rough "themes" over the years, this one has one that is more aligned in list and challenges!

In concert with that, themed teams are encouraged and will be granted bonus points for their efforts and commitment to the bit. There have been themed teams in the past, and they were AWESOME!

While encouraged, themes are optional so there's no reason to find this daunting in any way. Those with a winning spirit, however, will embrace any and all points they can earn.

I really hope next year's theme will be "Under the Sea."

5 days left! Get a teammate and clear your schedule! This'll be fun.

We just spent a good three hours expertly handcrafting this artisanal scavenger hunt list (with last minute modifications and entries), and it's a good one!

Slow cooked for months, aged in the finest oak casks and draped in the most pure of silks, the list for 2016 will provide an experience to be remembered.

Belay those fears, that's just your uncle speaking. Come spend a few hours outside yourself: stop being a worker bee for one day this year!

YOU are invited to PARTICIPATE in this GLORIOUS EXCURSION of mind and body, to EXPLORE the WILD REACHES of TIME, SPACE, and GEOGRAPHIC RELATIVISM!

ALL I ASK is for YOU to come and have a GOOD TIME (between 10-5, water provided but bring a snack). BRING a FRIEND, BE a friend! Bring TWO friends and we'll pair the odd one to create a BLIND DATE TEAM!
