Charleston,SC—Husk. OK maybe not as off the beaten path as we usually like, but having dinner in this 1890s restored home is a magical experience. I love everything about Charleston: great food, libations and live music abound. Amazing southern dishes at Husk include the pork belly and shrimp and grits. The food is all locally sourced and simply amazing. Right in the heart of downtown Charleston South Carolina one can find this gem. Not to be missed.

Getsemani, Cartegena, Colombia-Beyiu- The best start to any day is an awesome breakfast. If you want authentic, farm to table, and the freshest ingredients anywhere in Cartegena go to The Getsemani neighborhood and find Beyiu. Wonderful native ladies cooking amazing fresh dishes. The farmers cheese and fresh bread is to die for. This is the “slow cook” philosophy at its best. And don’t confuse that for slow service. When you’re done go and enjoy the amazing graffiti art work in the neighborhood.

A bit of history...The Drifter is a somewhat hidden speakeasy below what is now the 3rd oldest bar in Chicago...The Green Door which was founded back in the late 1800's. The Drifter which is a newer place is downstairs behind what looks like a shelving unit by the bathrooms. It was opened about 3 yrs ago after having been used as simply a storage and overflow room since end of prohibition. During Prohibition, it was used as said as a speakeasy. The wooden bar is from the 1800's and the cash register in the pic above is dated back to the early 1900's. On the weekends they have old school burlesque shows. Cool hidden gem.
