Liam Bates - 李牧 Adventurer, TV host & entrepreneur Fun. Excitement. Adventure. These are the words that Liam lives by as a world traveler, adventurer and documentary producer.

Though he grew up in Switzerland, one could argue he spent the majority of his time in China, where his passion for martial arts first took him about ten years ago. When he's not out climbing mountains and filming himself eating dubious foods, he spends his time in Beijing drinking tea. As the 21st Century information technology and social media evolves, Liam hopes to bridge the East and West cult

ures through TV, documentaries and of course as the Modern Marco Polo. You can learn more about Liam on his website or through his newly launched book titled "If you follow all the rules, you miss all the fun!" http://tinyurl.com/liambreakstherules

Hangzhou's #1 scenic spot is probably West Lake, the big lake which the city has grown around. It's beautiful to walk or bike around, but if you want something really special, check out "Impression West Lake", a show directed by Zhang Yimou (the guy behind Jet Li film Hero). It is beautiful, amazing, and literally on the lake. You will see people running on water for an hour. Seriously cool =D.

Huang Jiu, or "Yellow Wine" is a favourite alcoholic drink in the Hangzhou-Suzhou-Ningbo region of Eastern China. This is usually a deep brown colour, under 20% in alcohol and can be aged for many years. If you're ever in Hangzhou ask for a bottle and give it a shot! (perhaps literally... ;) )

During Chinese New Year fish is a very common meal. Want to know why? "Five things you didn't know about Chinese New Year!"

The idea for this blog article came by from a simple observation I had when we started to create the Chinese New Year resource pack on Promethean Planet - why do the Chinese use so much of the colour red for New Year?

Where you born in 1991? 2003? If so you should be wearing red underwear! When it comes to New Year there is a tradition of wearing red. Especially if it is the same Chinese Zodiac year you were born in,you should wear a piece of red on you for the whole year! If you're going to wear red for 365 days though, underwear becomes a logical choice.....

Chinese New Year holidays are slowly coming to a close! Over New Year it is common for the older generation to give money to the younger generation, often in beautiful red envelopes. China's big tech companies, like Hangzhou based Alibaba, have brought this tradition online. Over the holiday more than 652 million dollars were exchanged online as red envelope gift money!

Did you know? Chinese is not really one language, so much as a family of languages and dialects. Sometimes these are even mutually unintelligable! In "standard Chinese", or Mandarin, to rain is "xia yu", but in Hangzhou's dialect this would be said "lo yu" (落雨). Anyone know some other Hangzhou dialect...? =)
