to optimize people’s participation and engagement in daily life through a variety of cognitive approaches including the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP). Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is a therapeutic treatment approach for people (children and adults) who have difficulties performing everyday skills. CO-OP is

an active iterative client-centered meta-cognitive approach that employs collaborative goal setting, dynamic performance analysis, cognitive strategy use, enabling principles and guided discovery to promote skill acquisition, generalization and transfer. Internationally acclaimed by professional therapists and researchers, it is a therapy that guides individuals to independently discover and develop cognitive strategies to perform tasks such as writing, skipping, bicycling, typing, and other daily living skills. Research with this new approach has shown that, given the time and right strategies, people with difficulty learning, or re-learning, motor-based skills can master a large variety of skills

Congratulations to our Brazilian collegues! This amazing article reflects on the status of Occupational Therapy specialization in rehebilitation.
Abstract:
In different professions, specialization helps to guide professional competencies and responsibilities, directing knowledge and expertise. This article discusses the involvement of Occupational Therapy in physical rehabilitation services amidst changes in health concepts and paradigms, as well as within the profession's principles for this field of practice. Thus, it aims to discuss and justify the relevance of professional specialization in parameterizing practice. Accordingly, the study presents and problematizes arguments supported by historical and scientific frameworks, dilemmas, and new paradigms for rehabilitation actions and research, highlighting the need for disciplining the functional health specialty and updating resolutions related to these practices. It is considered that updating this framework by the professional organization contributes to improving practices and ensuring qualified access to health, as the lack of specialist professionals has brought disadvantages to the profession and, consequently, to those requiring the care of these professionals.

At the end of a year's cycle we intend to look back and reflect on developments. This could also be seen as an opportunity to discuss on how the CO-OP Approach is / can be implemented in work situations, organisations and systems. In Canada an interesting project on knowledge translation / implementation was started a couple of years ago. In this article the research groups reflects on the impact of the process and elements within.
In their conclusion they mention:
Although many factors may have influenced a change in access, significant changes in knowledge, skills, and aspects of self-efficacy of healthcare providers were seen and reported following the CO-OP KT intervention

Today on World Occupational Therapy Day, we like to share that occupational therapists support persons in finding and carrying out meaningful activities that contribute significantly to their health and wellbeing. Within the CO-OP Approach, these meaningful activities are at the center of the intervention. For more inspiration:
Meredith Chandler wrote an interesting blog on why OTs should opt for occupation-based interventions

Providing occupation-based interventions is crucial to the practice of occupational therapy. Here are 10 top reasons to be occupation-based.

Interesting new article: CO-OP Approach With Children and Youth With Executive Function Deficits After Acquired Brain Injury: A Qualitative Study of Care Partners’ Involvement (2024) Eleonore Dietrich; Helene Lebrault; Mathilde Chevignard; Rose Martini. The American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 2024, Vol. 78(5), 7805205050. Results show three themes emerged: (1) The child is an active agent in their therapy, (2) the care partner is the keystone who helps solidify the elements of CO-OP, and (3) CO-OP mastery requires time and practice, and its use evolves over time.

Care partners’ role in supporting their child’s engagement with the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) occupational therapy approach improved over time as their confidence in their child’s problem-solving abilities increased.
