Europe is dotted with beguiling walled cities that date back to medieval times. Some are found on hilltops overlooking scenic countryside, while others are perched in coastal locations, heavily fortified to fend off attackers who approached from the sea. While their original function as impregnable defensive sites is redundant, today the invasion instead comes from hordes of curious tourists, typically during the summer months. Visit in the off-season, however, and these cities are a delight to explore independently or with a guide as you listen to captivating tales of the past. Here are seven of Europe’s most charming medieval walled cities. Which is on your wish list?

The juxtaposition of impossibly turquoise waters and white limestone cliffs is one reason so many visitors flock to this gorgeous canyon in the foothills of the Alps. Rising nearly half a mile above the Verdon River, Les Gorges du Verdon (Verdon Gorge) is one of the most popular tourist attractions in southeastern France’s Provence region. Often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Europe,” the canyon stretches over 13 miles and plunges to depths greater than 2,200 feet. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s a favorite with hikers, rock climbers, and cyclists. And on the river itself, canoers and kayakers stop at the canyon’s many small, rocky beaches to enjoy picnics and brisk swims. During high season, many visitors also drive the twisting and narrow roads and stop at the scenic villages that encircle the canyon’s rim.

Where can you enjoy the most spectacular and bucolic summer sites and some of the world’s best summer wines? France! 🇫🇷

For many travelers, summer is the most anticipated season of the year. It’s a time associated with warmer weather, outdoor activities, and epic vacations. And, luckily, it’s also when Mother Nature adds an extra magic touch to the natural world. From magnificent lavender blooms to a spotted lake and a rainbow river, these are seven natural wonders you can only see in summer.

Between June and August every year, the countryside of the Provence region in the South of France turns into a mesmerizing patchwork of purple. Millions of lavender flowers bloom as far as the eye can see, creating scenes that have inspired artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh. The Valensole Plateau is perhaps the most famous location to enjoy the spectacle. It’s known for the rolling fields along the Route de Manosque and farms like Terraroma, where lavender oils and lavender-infused skin care products are made. The 2.5-mile-long Chemin des Lavandes (Lavender Path) in Sault is also worth checking out. Interpretive panels along the trail provide information about the botanical properties, cultivation, harvest, and distillation of the region’s most famous flower.

Nearby are caves of Champagnes, crisp Sancerres, the grandeur of Bordeaux, the cloisters of Burgundy.

Over paying for your rental car? Here are tips from agents on how to save.

Before you book your rental car, double-check that you’re not already eligible for any discounts. Often, universities, alumni associations, or corporations will offer discount codes for specific rental car companies. While many of these codes can be found online, front desk agents may ask to see proof of employment, alumni status, or university enrollment. But if you provide identification, you can knock down prices at major car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise — and potentially waive underage or additional driver fees. Still not eligible? No problem. AAA, the popular roadside assistance club, also offers up to 20% off Hertz rentals, plus other perks like discounts on prepaid fuel and a free additional driver. Meanwhile, USAA members who are active military personnel, veterans, or the spouse or child of a military member or veteran can receive up to 25% off rentals through Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis.

Many credit cards — particularly travel rewards cards — offer exclusive rental car perks and discounts. These may include complimentary vehicle upgrades, grace periods for returning your vehicle late, a free additional driver, or membership in elite status programs. Most travel credit cards also offer car rental insurance, which can help limit out-of-pocket costs in the event of an accident. In particular, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card are noteworthy for offering primary insurance coverage in the event of damage or theft (meaning you don’t have to go through your regular auto insurance provider first). These cards also offer up to 30% on Avis rentals and 25% off National rentals. The Platinum Card from American Express also offers discounts and top-tier Hertz benefits, including special discounts and priority services.

If you’re a frequent traveler, you’re probably already enrolled in one or more airline rewards programs. Before booking directly through a car rental website, log into your airline frequent flier accounts and see if you’re eligible to use your points or miles towards a reservation. Also check to see if the airline offers discounts if you book through their portal. For example, American Airlines AAdvantage members can save up to 35% and earn 500 bonus miles at Avis. If you’re flying Delta, you can enjoy extra savings with Alamo, Enterprise, and National, while United Airlines offers up to 35% savings with Budget and Avis.

And more here...

A rental car can easily blow through a large portion of your vacation budget, but the hefty price tag shouldn't cause you to reconsider. St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island located in Mount's Bay, Cornwall, UK. This enchanting island is crowned by a medieval castle and church, which are steeped in history and folklore. The Mount is accessible by a man-made causeway of granite setts, passable only at low tide, or by boat during high tide, providing an intriguing link to the mainland. The castle's origins date back to the 12th century when it was a Benedictine monastery, reflecting its sister site, Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. Over centuries, the Mount has witnessed various transformations, from a fortress to a place of pilgrimage and a private residence.

The village at the island’s base is a picturesque cluster of cottages and shops, where visitors can explore the sub-tropical terraced gardens that flourish in the island's unique microclimate. These gardens boast an array of exotic plants, thanks to the mild weather and protective granite slopes. The castle itself, with its labyrinthine passages and rooms filled with historical artifacts, offers panoramic views of the Cornish coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. Managed by the National Trust and inhabited by the St Aubyn family, St Michael’s Mount is a vibrant living community that blends heritage with the natural beauty of its surroundings, making it a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

We had the most fabulous trip to Nantucket, MA, this weekend, escaping 95 degree weather in NC for 60s and breezy on the island.

If you’ve never been, add it to your must-see adventure list! A step back in time with its cobblestone streets, tiny wooden houses, whaling and fishing heritage, Nantucket offers a perfect blend of quaint nostalgia for the sophisticated but laid back traveler — exquisite cocktails and cuisine or food trucks and breweries, the great outdoors for cycling, fishing, golf, tennis, kayaking, or spas for some TLC — relaxing but never dull!

In 1602, an Englishman named Bartholomew Gosnold first sighted the Island and then it was settled in 1659. In the late 1600s whales were found off shore and between 1750 and 1840, the Island was one of the major whaling ports in North America.

With the decline of the whaling industry in the 1880s, Nantucket became a Mecca for the tourism industry and is still drawing people to its natural and everlasting beauty along with its first-rate attractions, accommodations and restaurants.

Despite being a microstate wedged between Italy and France along the French Riviera, Monaco packs quite a punch as one of the wealthiest nations in the world. From its lavish casinos to world-famous auto races, Monaco has a thriving cultural scene that attracts thousands of high-rolling tourists each year.

Monaco is known as the “billionaire’s playground,” and for good reason. According to the 2023 Knight Frank Wealth Report, Monaco real estate is the most expensive in the world. Here, $1 million USD only affords a mere 183 square feet of space — just half the purchasing power you’d have in New York City. This high financial barrier of entry isn’t a problem for the majority of Monaco’s residents, however, as a 2022 report found that 27,303 of Monaco’s inhabitants had net worths in excess of $1 million USD, with 208 of those ultra-wealthy individuals breaking the $30 million mark. No matter where you turn in Monaco, you’re bound to encounter ostentatious displays of luxury and wealth.
