The Travelators Two Aussies juggling careers & travel. Tips on career breaks & travelling the world on a budget. Hi, we’re Tom and Katherine!

We have been travelling around the world on-and-off since 2007. We absolutely love to travel but we also love our lives and jobs back home. This blog is all about taking ‘career breaks’ to travel, and exploring some fairly off-the-beaten track locations along the way. *****
Another one of our favourite shots from our Pamir Highway trip in 2016. Here we ate dinner in an old shipping container and slept on mats in a yurt with a cow dung fire. It was bloody freezing and was our last stop before crossing the border into Tajikistan. It is one of the worlds highest border crossings at around 4000m above sea level. Here are a few of our other favourite Pamir Highway photos - http://thetravelators.com/2017/02/28/photo-journey-pamir-highway/.

📍 Astana, Kazakhstan
*****
This was our first glimpse of downtown Astana... needless to say, we were pretty surprised!! It felt like a 22nd century city - crazy modern architecture, huge government buildings and immaculate walkways. Gloss, metal and glass everywhere. We met up with a Couchsurfer here who told us that while it is certainly a modern looking city, there are still plenty of Kazakhs doing it tough. What have you heard about Kazakhstan? Would you visit?

Kosovo is beautiful but controversial! Here is our guest article for the blogging duo Goats On The Road about this great spot 😁

When we visited Kosovo earlier this year, we weren’t really sure what to expect. Most of what we knew about Kosovo was based on news reports we had seen at home many years ago. It was painted as war-torn and dangerous. But what was it like now? Since declaring independence in 2008, Kosovo hasn’t exa...

📍Pokhara, Nepal

Pokhara is the best place to relax after a long trek. There are lots of little bars spotted along the lake where you can grab a cheap beer and watch the sunset. We stayed in an amazing private room in a guesthouse only 5 minutes from the water for only $12 a night! Check out the Nepal section of our blog for our guide to backpacking in this awesome country.

Few countries idolise a single person like the Mongolians idolise Ghengis Khan.

He is so revered that in 2008 they created a 40m statue in his honour. The statue is wrapped in 250 tonnes of stainless steel and visitors can climb up through the statue for views from the head of Ghengis' horse.

Here's our latest post about our family Christmas road trip through Europe. Features tantrums over cards, matching Christmas sweaters and impossible jigsaw puzzles. Oh, and we also saw Germany, Czech Republic and Austria. Have you attempted a family road trip before? How was it?

1 year ago today we started what was an incredible year long backpacking trip.

Our first stop was Kochi - the laid back port city in southern India. The locals still use the "Chinese fishing nets" - the nets haven't changed a lot from when they were first installed in 1842.

We're back in Australia after an incredible 12 months of travelling the world. After such a long trip we needed a break so thought a week on a houseboat on the Murray River was called for.

Happy new year everyone! Just so you don't all think we are living on chicken nuggets and coco pops here in Paris, here is Tom with a look of pure glee on his face while he smashes some Brie on a baguette.

We had a great NYE in Paris at a local restaurant where everyone spoke French (always a good sign), there was melted Camembert on the menu and plenty of Champagne. Not a bad way to bring in 2017!

A winter wonderland in Füssen, Germany 🇩🇪 last week. Füssen is right next door to the Neuschwanstein Castle, so we stayed just for a night before we visited the castle. To be honest, there's not heaps to see in Füssen but it was pretty beautiful all covered in snow. A big novelty for us Aussies who don't see snow often 😊 We were lucky to be checking it out with my brother and who travelled all the way from Australia for Christmas with us!

Feeling a bit tubby after smashing too much food over Christmas?

Travelling can sometimes be the same, in places like Vietnam where everything is absolutely delicious, you might put on an extra kilo or two.

KG has penned an awesome article about why you shouldn't care!

When we first started travelling, I compared myself to other travellers a lot. I spent energy worrying about what I ate, what I drank, and what I wore.

As much as we love getting off the beaten track, sometimes you just need to go "full tourist".

This was one of those times.

This mesmerising image is the ceiling inside the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Esfahan, Iran. Depending on what time of day you visit and the angle from which you are looking at them the tiles will change colour.

The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque itself it dwarfed by the massive Shah Mosque which is only a few metres away, but the interior is incredibly beautiful.

Have you ever been ripped off by a dodgy taxi driver?

You're not alone! Almost everyone we meet when travelling has at least one taxi horror story (including us). Check out our latest guest post on Goats On The Road for our top tips on how to avoid getting ripped off by taxi drivers.

From New Delhi to Sydney, every city has its share of taxi drivers out to rip off tourists. Here are 7 ways to avoid being overcharged on your next trip.

This is a shot of downtown Prizren, Kosovo's second largest city. Kosovo has had a pretty turbulent history so has been skipped by travellers in the past, but it is definitely on the way up! It's super cheap, the people are great and the coffee is amazing (even us Melbourne coffee snobs liked it 😋). Check out our latest post for a crash course in Kosovo history, and some great stuff to do if you visit: http://thetravelators.com/2016/12/14/discovering-kosovo/

We just spent a few days in northern Italy with our good friend Alessandro. We explored Trieste for a few days before heading out to Zugliano and the beautiful area of Vicenza.

We were even lucky enough to have Alessandro's mother, Gisella, attempt to teach us how to make gnocchi. Despite our best efforts our gnocchi was all sorts of different sizes - lucky Gisella saved the day!
