Following the Southeast Conservation Corps’ Volunteer Day at historic Craven’s House on Lookout Mountain, we invite everyone to come just down the hill to Grey Rocks for a tour of this beautiful 1917 Arts and Crafts home located on the battlefield and recently restored to its former glory. Enjoy an open house tour, wings, and wine just before kick offs.

On Saturday, November 2, between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm, Southeast Conservation Corps interns are looking for volunteers to install signs for the Great Eastern Trail, part of which runs through Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Cravens House, 1060 Cravens Terrace, on Lookout Mountain.

Apologizing for the late notice, but a short hike on the new "Bluff Trial" is being planned for tomorrow (Saturday September 19th) at 212 Fairy Trail on Lookout Mountain. All Lookout Hiking Club friends are invited to meet at 4:30 PM at the home on Fairy Trail (pictured) and walk down the bluff among unique rock formations to visit what appear to be petroglyphs carved into the rock ages ago. A Bar-B-Que dinner will follow at the house. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended. Those not up for the hike can enjoy many unique formations from the top of the bluff and enjoy food and refreshments. More photos to follow.

man who went there last night says wildflowers were beautiful
Yesterday (3/27) was one of the rare days this spring – mostly clear skies and warmer weather – into the 60’s. As a plus a couple of my grandkids wanted to join me, so a great time at The Pocket was guaranteed. Several of the “signature species” at The Pocket – Virginia Bluebell, Wood (Celandine) Poppy, Dutchman’s Breeches (or, as my grandson called them, “Upside Down Pants from Holland), Trout Lily are blooming right now. I’m developing a checklist to use so I won’t have to photograph or remember what all is blooming, and of the 51 species on my current version of the checklist, 25 are blooming right now.

An intrepid group of Lookout Hiking Club members set out to explore the new Stringer's Ridge Park recently opened on the North Shore. Eight sculptures created by Brevard College Associate Professor of Art Kyle Lusk were recently unveiled as part of the Stringer’s Ridge Trailhead Markers Public Art Project in Chattanooga, Tenn. LHC stalwarts Gail Bryan, Gail Perry and John Wilson are shown admiring one of Lusk's new trail markers. Photo by Garnet Chapin.

LHC hiked along the full length of the Light Mill Road. This was in use well before the Civil War. It was a higher route (especially in times of flooding along Lookout Creek) from the Light Mill at the present Reflection Riding to its junction with the Federal Road behind the present Ruby's Falls.

21/08/2013

weather is looking really good for sat so will plan hike along the full length of the Light Mill Road. this was in use well before the Civil War and is still in very good shape for the most part it was a higher route (esp for in times of flooding along lookout creek) from the Light mill at the present Reflection Riding to its junction with the Federal Road behind the present Ruby's Fall
it is a pretty level hike of 2-3 miles. jason light of atlanta, a descendant of the lights from lights mill, will go with us
please meet at the parking area behind ruby falls at 9:15 a.m.
go past the front door of ruby falls. when you get to the spot where you would normally veer right to go back to Scenic Highway, go left instead to the parking area above where the rappelers park for climbing at eagle's nest

I am an amateur genealogist and found reference to a historical marker that commemorated a Chickamauga Indian skirmish with the Tennessee militia in 1788. Can anyone tell me if a marker exists on one of the Lookout Mountain hiking trails. Thanks.
