Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, spent a portion of his childhood living here in Ravenna. Neil’s father Stephen worked for the state government and needed to audit Portage County records. Stephen met Merrible Myers, who worked in the county Recorder’s office. She heard the Armstrong family needed a place to stay, and offered to rent them an apartment in her home at 124 Elm Street.
Stephen moved in with his wife and two children, including young Neil. Stephen’s work was intended to be completed in six months, but the records hadn’t been audited in so long that the Armstrong family ended up living here 18 months. Did Neil’s stay here influence his later career?
According to Merrible, Neil was adventurous even at a young age. The house had an outdoor pool, and despite warnings by his parents, Neil fell in and had to be rescued by his mother. Merrible became friends with the Armstrong family, and remained in communication with them when their son became an astronaut.
Research on Armstrong’s stay in Ravenna was done as part of the Ravenna 225th Anniversary Timeline Project. The timeline will be displayed in the library gallery in June.
