Narrative:
Sustainability has a positive impact not only on the environment, but the culture and the economy of the place. Involving community members in tourism activities is such an important way to have a huge impact. The ripple effect, particularly for elders, women, and the environment, demonstrates the power of tourism.
All sectors of tourism should work together not to give up our innate culture to the culture of the visitors. Instead, we should have a stronger sense of “self” and preserve our own traditions and practices. I hope we can extensively offer tourists a total experience that speaks of our own identity as Filipinos.
To future-proof Philippine's beauty, we need to join hands together to meet the clear and major goals of sustainability. It should be ensured that the gains and benefits should outweigh the negative effects brought by tourism activities.
The photo features three community elders demonstrating the making of a bag made of palm strips, a shrimp trap made of bamboo strips, and toys out of coconut leaves while one is practicing her komposo songs. This was taken before the visitors' arrival in Motag Living Museum, Malay, Aklan. During the tour, they teach tourists how to make their own. This exhibits the inclusive participation of the locals to cultural tourism which is sustainable and progressive.
