Gorillas are regarded as the second closest relative to human sharing almost 97% of human genes. Mountain gorillas are regarded as endangered species only about 880 of these remaining apes are shared by only three countries including Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic republic of Congo. gorilla tracking is the major safari activity done in these three countries where they live. a huge number of people leave their beautiful homes and offices and come and spent some quality time with these endangered apes in their natural homes. you can not find mountain gorillas in zoos or under captivity like many other primates species and wildlife, they can only be seen in their natural habitat deep into the forest. is currently regarded as the best country to go for gorilla tracking and it offers 97% and above chances of tracking, a Uganda gorilla permit costs $600 in the high season and $450 in the low season months. Rwanda gorilla permits were recently increased from 750$ to 1500$ per person per tracking and Congo permits costs $450. Let the experience continue by visiting the endangered apes for a memorable experience.http://www.safarigorillas.com/uganda-safaris/7-days-uganda-gorilla-and-wildlife-safari.html

At Rushaga in South western Uganda which is located along the Congo and Rwanda there are comfortable lodges which are good for you during your gorilla tracking expeditions. The lodges are stone built lodges and down are settled with displaced Batwa, some of whom have turned to agriculture. In the southern sector some twenty family groups have been habituated. The edge of the protected forest is sharp with cleared agricultural land rising up the mountain side defining the protected area boundary. The Batwa were displaced from the forests where they had lived alongside the gorillas for centuries when the national park was gazetted in 1991. All of the Batwa have now been displaced from the forests and are struggling with the transition to modernity; some of them are still living on wasteland in their traditional leaf and branch shelters.

Rwanda provides the easiest access to gorilla trekking so it is your best option if you are combining it with a safari to Kenya or Tanzania. The town of Ruhengeri is the jumping off point for trekking in Volcanoes National Park. It is located only a few hours drive on excellent roads from the capital and its international airport Kigali. Seeing gorillas in Uganda is more of a process and involves an 8-10 hour drive from the international airport in Entebbe. I recommend making Uganda a full 8-day trip with stops along the way instead of just a place to see gorillas whereas you could see gorillas in Rwanda in just a few days. Seeing mountain gorillas can involve 2-4 hours of hiking to find them.http://www.safarigorillas.com/

There are discounted gorilla permits most especially during the low seasons. These seasons are usually during the months of April, May and November and have extended by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The discounted fee is from U$ 600 to US 450 therefore, for those who are interested in to see these endangered apes at a discounted price you need to pay a fee of U$ 450 for each gorilla permit. Please note that this is during the months of April, May and November. It is an offer of the East African residents as they will be required to a fee of only U$400.This however does not apply to Rwanda. To obtain a gorilla trekking permit, you should be U$ 750 without fail or else, you will not obtain a gorilla permit in the Republic of Rwanda. Thus, you will not view the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda if you do not possess a gorilla permit amounting to U$ 750. Rwanda is more strict than Uganda when it comes to practicing this activity and you need be very careful and strict in your Endeavor to participate in gorilla trekking in the republic of Rwanda.

If you are a budget traveler, I recommend you to track gorillas in the months of April, May and November. Please do take advantage of these seasons because it will make you save some of your money and spend it on some other useful thins which are important during your safari or after your safari or tour. During these months, not only does the price of the gorilla permits go down, but also the prices of most accommodation facilities tend to go down. You stand high chances of sleeping in a luxury hotel or accommodation at every cheaper price. I strongly encourage you to travel during this time. The weather is also usually conducive for you. Some tourist however who have been in the country have raised questions to think that for the gorilla tracking going low is attributed to fact that this discount is only in months when it is heavily raining in the Bwindi Impenetrable national park. This has not been the answer towards this because Bwindi Impenetrable national park receives heavy rainfall throughout the year which can rain every 30 minutes irrespective of whether it is a dry season or not.
As soon as you have decided on the travel dates, you should embark on looking for a genuine tour company or operator who will book for you a genuine gorilla permit. Most of these tour operators within the country do accept many modes of payment including; pespal, visa card and Master Card payments. You are kindly advised to contact any the tour operator you are using if there are any other means of payments you will to use. Most of these tour operators will require you to confirm your safari with a full deposit since it is a discounted permit. Not only is the payment of gorilla permit required but also on accommodation, telephone calls and wildlife Authority.http://www.safarigorillas.com/

What to expect from the Rwanda Mountain Gorillas Safari
You have to wake up early morning, meaning that you must find accommodation closer to the park entrance. At this time, your African gorilla guide will be briefing you at 7 am about safety precautions as well as the etiquette. There are over 80 gorilla tracking guides provided by the Rwanda Development Board, well trained and speaking English and French. Together with other members of the group, you proceed to the forest and start the hike which may be tiring depending on your physical strength. Remember they are called mountain gorillas so an element of hiking is a must. The adventure takes anything from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. The English-speaking forest guides are amazingly good, and will lead you to the specific ‘habituated’ mountain gorilla group, which certainly will be acquitted to human presence.
About the silver back
A mature silver back male gorilla may weigh as much as 200kg, or even 3 times the overall weight of an average man, though the anxiety normally disappears once you set eyes on the group. Normally the gorilla group will be scattered over a small area of thick vegetation. They will carry on with their interactions and even feed without any concern of their human visitors although they will be observing you with interest. Rarely one, normally a playful youngster, will boldly approach you with inquisitiveness, at times coming really close that you will need to move away. (You are not allowed to move less than 7 meters close to them; this is to safe guard the gorillas from contagious human diseases.) The climate in Musanze (1,700m above sea level) is mostly cold. Therefore, you should carry along warm clothing.http://www.safarigorillas.com/

Gorillas and Gorilla permits in Uganda and Rwanda
Mountain gorillas live in four national parks; the two parks found in Uganda while one park is found in Rwanda and one is found in the democratic republic of Congo.

Most gorilla safaris conducted in Rwanda will give you a chance to go trekking gorillas twice in the Volcanoes national park viewing different Gorilla families or back to the same family for the second gorilla trek. Beside your journey from Kigali you will not miss to see the spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains heading north to the Volcanoes national park.

Permits:
- Only a limited number of permits are available in each gorilla park, therefore it is essential to book well in advance
- Permits need to be paid for at the time of the initial safari booking so that they can be purchased immediately. Delays in payment can result in permits not being secured
- Part of the gorilla permit fee goes to the communities living around the national parks. Permits are non-refundable, expect for medical reasons and medical certificate when it has not been provided.
-Gorilla viewing can be denied at a short notice because of the national park border closure, security changes or gorillas going out of range. In such circumstances, refunds are at the direction of the security therefore obtaining a gorilla permit is not a guarantee of seeing a gorilla!

Health and equipment:
- To protect gorillas from disease, no child under 15 or people with illnesses may go tracking.
- Trackers must be fit and good health as tracking in thick forest at heights up to 3,000 million traversing steep-sided mountains and ravines can be tough
-When gorilla tracking, one needs to be properly equipped
-Walking sticks are provided at the lodges

With the gorilla permits:
At the national parks you will meet a ranger who explains the rules for tracking gorillas and will take you up to the gorillas
-About one hour is allowed with the gorillas, at a distance of at least 7 meters
- Flash photography is not allowed
-Personal DVD recorders are allowed and profession film makers need to get permission to purchase filming permits.http://www.safarigorillas.com/

Elephants form deep family bonds and live in tight social units. A family is led by an older matriarch and typically includes three or four of her offspring and their young. Males leave the family unit between the ages of 12 and 15 and may lead solitary adult lives.

They live in a very structured social order. The social lives of male and female elephants are very different. The females spend their entire lives in tightly knit family groups made up of mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts. These groups are led by the eldest female, or matriarch. Adult males, on the other hand, live mostly solitary lives.

The social circle of the female elephant does not end with the small family unit. In addition to encountering the local males that live on the fringes of one or more groups, the female's life also involves interaction with other families, clans, and sub populations. Most immediate family groups range from five to fifteen adults, as well as a number of immature males and females. When a group gets too big, a few of the elder daughters will break off and form their own small group. They remain very aware of which local herds are relatives and which are not. The life of the adult male is very different. As he gets older, he begins to spend more time at the edge of the herd, gradually going off on his own for hours or days at a time. Eventually, days become weeks, and somewhere around the age of fourteen, the mature male, or bull, sets out from his natal group for good. While males do live primarily solitary lives, they will occasionally form loose associations with other males. These groups are called bachelor herds. The males spend much more time than the females fighting for dominance with each other. Only the most dominant males will be permitted to breed with cycling females. The less dominant ones must wait their turn. It is usually the older bulls, forty to fifty years old, that do most of the breeding. The dominance battles between males can look very fierce, but typically they inflict very little injury. Most of the bouts are in the form of aggressive displays and bluffs. Ordinarily, the smaller, younger, and less confident animal will back off before any real damage can be done. However, during the breeding season, the battles can get extremely aggressive, and the occasional elephant is injured. During this season, known as musth, a bull will fight with almost any other male it encounters, and it will spend most of its time hovering around the female herds, trying to find a receptive mate.

OFFSPRING:
Females carry their young for almost two years. At birth, the calf weighs about 250 pounds. A cow may give birth every three to four years. Elephant social life, in many ways, revolves around breeding and raising of the calves. A female will usually be ready to breed around the age of thirteen, at which time she will seek out the most fit male to mate with. Elephants have a very long childhood. They are born with fewer survival instincts than many other animals. Instead, they must rely on their elders to teach them the things they need to know. The ability to pass on information and knowledge to their young has always been a major asset in the elephant's struggle to survive. Today, however, the pressures humans have put on the wild elephant populations, from poaching to habitat destruction, mean that the elderly often die at a younger age, leaving fewer teachers for the young. All members of the tightly knit female group participate in the care and protection of the young. Since everyone in the herd is related, there is never a shortage of baby sitters. In fact, a new calf is usually the center of attention for all herd members. All the adults and most of the other young will gather around the newborn, touching and caressing it with their trunks. The baby is born nearly blind and at first relies, almost completely, on its trunk to discover the world around it.

After the initial excitement dies down, the mother will usually select several full time baby sitters, or "all mothers", from her group. They walk with the young as the herd travels, helping the calves along if they fall or get stuck in the mud. The more all mothers a baby has, the more free time its mother has to feed herself.

THREATS:
Habitat loss and the ivory trade are the greatest threats to the elephants’ future. Another threat to elephant's survival in general is the ongoing cultivation of their habitats with increasing risk of conflicts of interest with human cohabitants. Lacking the massive tusks of its African cousins, the Asian elephant's demise can be attributed mostly to loss of its habitat. Elephants need massive tracts of land because, much like the slash and burn farmers, they are used to crashing through the forest, tearing down trees and shrubs for food and then cycling back later on, when the area has regrown. As forests are reduced to small pockets, elephants become part of the problem, quickly destroying all the vegetation in an area, eliminating all their resources.

Larger, long lived, slow breeding animals, like the elephant, are more susceptible to over hunting than other animals. They cannot hide, and it takes many years for an elephant to grow and reproduce..http://www.safarigorillas.com/
