Won the Best Nation Building song.
Peter "Ram" Wiggins! His contributions to the entertainment world started as a DJ in the mid eighties. Through being inspired by the environment around , he started writing his own lyrics which then led him to giving the mic a try. From then, the rest was history.
His Dub [Dancehall] influenced background has helped him to form his own unique style to the soca music he has produced. He too also played/ plays a key role in forming the soca landscape in Barbados. With songs like "Quicksand" it was clear Ram was a talented lyricist. This resulted in the production of his internationally acclaimed songs: "Tight" , "Pumpin" and "Woman By My Side", all of which are still playing in various soca fetes around the world.
We @iLoveCropOver believe @PeterRamRoss has brought tremendous contributions to #CropOver over the years and we are looking forward to seeing what the future has in store. Keep pumping! 🙏🏿🙏🏿

2012 Party Monarch and Road March Winner
He is called #MrCropOver and is one of the hardest working entertainers the island has ever seen. Producing Hit after Hit, Year after Year , #LilRick aka the #ChihuahuaBusinessMan aka #HypaDawg aka Rick, whose real name is Ricky Reid, is one of Barbados' most popular entertainers. He started out on the dub scene in Barbados with songs like "Dollar Wine" , "Abc" , "De Yutes", while he deejayed across the island.
Since entering the soca arena he has played a major role in setting Crop Over soca apart from any other island. With songs such as "hypa dawg", "Bumpa Inspector" and "Got To Be There" , there was, and still is, only one thing you can do - Wukkup. His music is meant for wukking up, not chipping or waving flags.
His five (5) Party Monarch Titles and three (3) Roach March Titles do not do justice to the impact this legend has made to Crop Over over the years. Without @lilrickhd #CropOver would not be what it is today.
We truly respect the hard work Sir. Just like how you said "Barbados I Love You" during your party Monarch victory this year. @lilrickhd, we Love You!! Bigup yuhself.
Ps. This tune hay would still mash up a fete! #HypaDawg

It was approximately 4 am here in Barbados , on September 23rd, 2000. This was one occasion where Light and Power and CBC could not fail as the whole nation was tuned in to watch our star boy Obadele Thompson run the 100m finals at the Sydney Olympics , with the chance to win a medal.
And that he did! Crossing the line in a time of 10.04 seconds, he became the first and still the only Barbadian to win an Olympic medal.
It was a great joy to watch and knowing we witnessed Obadele Thompson carve his way into the Barbadian history books, made that moment even more special.
Due to his achievements, he was made "Ambassador and Special Envoy to the Youth" by our former Prime Minister Mr. Owen Arthur.
Congrats again Mr. Obadele Thompson!!

It was March 31st, 1997 at Kensington Oval Barbados. India needed 120 runs to win the third of five tests, with all 10 wickets in hand. They lost the last 8 wickets for 49 runs to be all out for a mere 82 runs.
Captained by the young Brian Lara for the first time in his career, due to Walsh's hamstring injury, he utilized the powerful bowling attack of Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop, Franklyn Rose and Mervyn Dillion to put a devastating end to India's pursuit of the small total of 120 runs.
In 2014 the batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar, revealed that he was scarred and wanted to quit cricket altogether after this loss. "Monday, 31st March 1997 was a dark day in the history of Indian cricket and definitely the worst of my captaincy career", he said in the autobiography. Interestingly yet unfortunately for them, this test would have been their first win in the caribbean since 1976.

Throughout the 90s, Barbadian Calypso music was considered the best and most consistent across the Caribbean. 1996 was no different as Alison Hinds along with Square One [Formed in 1986] released the featured song , Raggamuffin and won the Road March title that year.
Formed by Anderson "Blood" Armstrong in 1986, it included Cecil Riley (Vocals), Paul Slater (bass guitar), George Jones (keyboards) and Winston Beckles (drums). While Alison Hinds (Born in England) joined in 1987.
Through the 4 albums they released, their music has and continues to touch the hearts and waist lines of many Calypso and soca lovers from across the globe.
We consider their music to be the original get on bad music. Today we will reminisce on the many hits that @AlisonHinds, @BloodArmstrong and the #SquareOne band has produced over the years.

Meanwhile..... Here in Barbados!!
We are celebrating the great accomplishments of the General , Mr. Edwin Yearwood. An example of his tremendous talent was introduced to the world in 1995 through his first attempt at the Crop Over Competitions where he won all three (3) competitions:
• The Pic - O - De - Crop Finals [Obadele + A Voice In My Head]
• Party Monarch [Obadele]
• Tune Of The Crop [Obadele]
This was just the beginning of Edwin's wonderful career, as he continued to bless our ears with sweet sweet Calypso and soca music while he and his band, Krosfyah traveled the world.
Today we also wanted to highlight the year Party Monarch was introduced to the Crop Over Festival. Starting that same year, 1995, Party Monarch was held at the "Calypso Bowl" along the Ernie Bourne Highway and attracted thousandsss of Bajans and Visitors every year. Those were the days when the east coast never saw so many people all in one day.

Today we celebrate victory!
Considered to be one of the most bizzar football matches to be played, this 1994 Caribbean Cup qualifier between Barbados and Grenada left many confused while the Bajan's celebrated until morning.
It was late January, 1994. The last game between Barbados and Grenada remained to decide the winner of the group which also comprised Puerto Rico. Grenada was at the top of the table while Barbados was last but just needed to win by a two (2) goal difference in order to finish top of the table.
Here is the unique situation about this tournament. The Golden Goal rule implemented, awarded two (2) goals to the winner rather than the one (1) goal scored, which was the common rule worldwide. Therefore, if the game did go into extra time Barbados would still have the chance to qualify top of the table.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Barbados were 2-0 up. However, the whole dynamic of the game completely changed when Grenada, refusing to give up, pulled one back in the 83rd minute. This meant Barbados had to score otherwise they were out. Due to the Golden Goal rule, the Barbadians decided to take the match to extra time by scoring in their own net.
So said so done; a Barbadian defender and the goalkeeper exchanged passes in the penalty area for several minutes before the defender kicked the ball into his own net deliberately. With three minutes extra time, this meant that Barbados had to prevent Grenada from scoring against or for them. This created absolute chaos on the field, but fortunately for the Bajans, the referee blew for full time and the game went to extra time.
Believe it or not, Barbados went onto score in extra time via forward Trevor Thorne and because the Golden Goal represented two goals, this was enough to give them the 4-2 win and hence qualification to the Caribbean Cup. The Grenadian players dropped to the floor, dejected and despondent. They had g

Today we are paying respects to the Rasta man of the Crop Over Calypso game - Ras Iley. In the year of 1993, he released the song (Inez). This song immediately became a major Calypso hit resulting in him winning the Road March title that year. Today, "Inez" along with "Spring Garden on Fire" (his other very popular song which won Roach March in 1986) still continue to send calypso lovers in a frenzy on the dance floor.

"Boots" [1983] - Written and sang By The Mighty Gabby// Produced by Eddie Grant .
Gabby, the people's advocate, wrote this song in response to the Government's militarization policy which was implemented in 1983. This policy was seen through the sizable growth of our Barbados Defense Force while also including the deployment of the force to St Vincent to end the Anti-Cato protests (Cato was Prime Minister at the time).
The timing of this song was such that some sources have also tied the song to the US invasion of Grenada (to end their political revolution), where the Barbados Government not only showed political support but also provided a base for their military.
#BarbadosAdvocacy #TheLegendHimself
His music spoke the truth from the perspective of the general Barbadian population. However, songs such as "Boots" and "Jack" were banned from the radio waves across the island.
To this Day "BOOTS" is still played globally and is seen as one of the greatest calypso songs ever be made!!

👆🏿👆🏿How Saturday's in Barbados were set up. To watch the graceful Concorde make its journey to our island.
It's journey to Barbados started on March 17th 1977 to take her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II back to London after her Silver Jubilee visit to Barbados.
It did not return to the island until the mid 1980, making weekly visits on Saturdays during our busy Winter ❄️ months. In the 1990s it it also began making visits to the island during the summer months.
The arrival of the Concorde on Saturday mornings became a spectacle for many Barbadians and tourists. While those who lived on the south knew when the supersonic plane was arriving due to its roaring engines.
Unfortunately the Concorde ended its journey to Barbados on November 17th 2003. However British Airways loaned Concorde G-BOAE to the people of Barbados in recognition of the role the island played in its success.
Today it sits as a tourist attraction in The Barbados Concorde Experience at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

Crop Over began in 1780 but was modernized and refocused in 1974. Prior to its rebirth, Crop Over festivities were held on individual plantations to celebrate the end of the crop season. The Celebratory festivities included music [provided by what we know as the Tuk Band), plenty dancing, a large feast and finally the burning of "Mr. Harding" [which symbolised the difficult periods between sugar cane crop seasons, where employment was difficult to obtain and money was scarce] .
In 1940 these festivities dwindled due to the decline in the sugar cane industry but continued through the 40s, 50s and 60s.
It was then in 1974 when the then Barbados Board of Tourism reactivated the concept of Crop Over to attract tourists to the island during the slow season. This, as we can see today has become a successful initiative as the festival continues to grow larger every year. With over 55,000 visitors recorded to have visited during July this year, we hope it continues to grow from strength to strength. 💪🏿💪🏿
Also note that in 1983, when the @TheNcfBarbados was formed, they were given the responsibility of annually producing Crop Over.
