IRCC Updates Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility

New guidelines introduced in September have updated the criteria for international graduates applying for a PGWP after November 1. Certain graduates at different levels of study will now need to meet specific field of study requirements to qualify for a work permit.

Note: These field of study requirements do not apply to those with bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degrees from universities.

Minister Marc Miller made this announcement with this key note 🗒️

1)
IRCC shall tighten the cap more in 2025 and plan to issue 437,000 study permit.

2)
Masters And PHD program now require Provincial Attestation Letter for year 2025 and 2026

3)
English Proficiency Test Is Now Required To Access Post Graduate Work Permkt from November 1st 2024.

4)
Spousal Open Work Permit Shall No Longer Be Issued To Master’s Degree Students Whose Study Program Is lesser than 16months.

CANADA WORK PERMIT UPDATE:

August 26, 2024, the Canadian Government introduced new regulations to limit the hiring of foreign workers:

1. Employers can now only hire foreign workers for 10% of low-income jobs.

2. The duration of employment for low-income jobs has been reduced from 2 years to 1 year.

3. Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) will not be issued in regions with unemployment rates above 6%.

4. Beginning September 2, 2024, LMIA processing in Montreal for jobs paying under $27.47/hour will pause for six months.

These changes will take effect on September 26, 2024, with exceptions for agriculture, construction, and health workers.

Policy Update for Temporary Residents in Canada

As of August 28, temporary residents on visitor visas can no longer apply for work permits from within Canada. This policy was originally introduced in August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to help visitors unable to return home. The policy allowed them to apply for a work permit without leaving the country and permitted those who previously held work permits to work legally while awaiting a decision on their new application.

Although this policy was set to expire in February 2025, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has decided to end it earlier to manage the number of temporary residents and maintain the immigration system’s integrity. Applications submitted before August 28 will still be processed under the previous policy.
