Welcome2milwaukee by Katleen Speelman

Katleen Speelman is a devoted and passionate history teacher who moved with her husband and three kids from Belgium to Dallas, TX. in 2014. Besides volunteering at the local school, she founded her own enterprise, the European Academy of Bright Stars, LLC., where she organizes virtual trips to Europe and offers language classes in French and Dutch. She also expresses her love and passion for European cuisine through various cooking workshops in her American dream kitchen.

Four years later, we can find Katleen in Milwaukee, WI. Her two sons are studying at college in Belgium while she, her husband and daughter moved to a loft in an “Old Warehouse” dating from 1893, in the middle of the historic Third Ward District, close to the Public Market and the station.

The EABS is put “on hold”. While Katleen keeps teaching Dutch online through the Dutch Flemish Language Institute, next to substituting at her daughter’s school, she enjoys exploring the vibrant city, strolling along the River Walk and the shores of Lake Michigan. As a member of the Historic MKE. Inc, an historic preservation organization, she delves into the history of the city.

Milwaukee’s culinary scene is also a gift from heaven for Katleen: there are classical French bistros, Italian trattorias, German Biergartens, Irish pubs, countless microbreweries and a Benelux café, which has a bigger beer list than the average Belgian pub. There are even authentic Speakeasys, illegal bars dating from the prohibition time. Katleen’s favorite? Tasting delicious oysters during happy hour with an incredible view over Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee Art Museum, designed by Calatrava.

Talking about art and culture, Milwaukee is the place to be. Sculpture MKE is an annual street art festival (June 1st – October 31st) which is worth paying a visit to. The famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright also contributed to the Milwaukee art scene, with the Burnham Block as the best example.

There is even a place for Harley Davidson fans, with Milwaukee being the hometown of the essential American bike.

The top attraction of the city however is Summerfest, “World’s Biggest Music Festival” according to Guinness World Records, which takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July. Other themed concerts such as Fiesta Italiana, Indian Summer Festival and Irish Fest are held throughout the year at the immense terrains close to Lake Michigan and are definitely worth the visit.
