“Quest for the White River” Part 2. Another 11 miles but finally found it! My friend and I particularly enjoyed the barns and scenery on this part of the trail between Elkhorn and Walworth County. The White River Trail is actually constructed on the old railroad line (1858-1975) between Lake Michigan and the Missouri River. Only a small part of it follows the White River. On our way back home we stopped and for some local farmland produce to make our hubbies happy ;-)

Visited Lester’s Bison Farms 🦬 earlier this week… Still enjoying my visit! I made the perfect stew for a Saturday night. 😋 Did you know bison meat has less calories and fat than beef? It is also an excellent source of lean protein. It provides a variety of essential nutrients, like vitamin B, zinc, iron and it’s a great way to obtain omega-3 fats and other healthy fatty acids. I believe the antioxidants in the red wine and swiss chard help protect the lining of the blood vessels in my heart as well. ;-)

We hiked a bit of the “Indian Trail/Jambeau Trail” on Indigenous People’s Day. This path has been in use for much longer than the USA has even been a country. In the second Pike River School (1906-1962) I read this poem from Annette Wynne from 1919 on the wall. I bet al lot of people still can recite.

Indian Children

Where we walk to school each day
Indian children used to play-
All about our native land,
Where the shops and houses stand.

And the trees were very tall,
And there were no streets at all,
Not a church and not a steeple-
Only woods and Indian people.

Only wigwams on the ground,
And at night bears prowling round-
What a different place today
Where we live and work and play!

21,707 steps into nature Springs and a giant step into history today. We visited the original (1847-1906) and second (1906-1962) Pike River School. Once located at County Hwy A, but now rebuilt Hollow
Enchanted by the surrounding woods and charmed by the Story Trail. Must visit with kids!

Adventure Tuesday (hiking 🥾 7 miles and biking 🚴 20 miles) was very educational!
We had a “close encounter” with the following creature. Although it is classed as a least-concern specious because of range expansion, it was the first time we came across one of these semiaquatic species during our hikes near Lake Michigan.

SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivoria
Family: Mustelidae
Genus: Neovision
Species: N. vison

It is a carnivore as you can see but at no point we were in danger because it feeds on rodents, fish, crustaceans, frogs and birds. It kills by biting the back of the head or neck, leaving canine puncture marks 9-11 mm! We were lucky... 😉

Apparently this predator is farmed for its fur as well but they tend to escape quite often...

And the most interesting fact about this “furry” animal is that it has been found to transmit SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 ! 😱

FYI talking about the AMERICAN MINK 😉

Welcome2milwaukee by Katleen Speelman

Katleen Speelman is a devoted and passionate history teacher who moved with her husband and three kids from Belgium to Dallas, TX. in 2014. Besides volunteering at the local school, she founded her own enterprise, the European Academy of Bright Stars, LLC., where she organizes virtual trips to Europe and offers language classes in French and Dutch. She also expresses her love and passion for European cuisine through various cooking workshops in her American dream kitchen.

Four years later, we can find Katleen in Milwaukee, WI. Her two sons are studying at college in Belgium while she, her husband and daughter moved to a loft in an “Old Warehouse” dating from 1893, in the middle of the historic Third Ward District, close to the Public Market and the station.

The EABS is put “on hold”. While Katleen keeps teaching Dutch online through the Dutch Flemish Language Institute, next to substituting at her daughter’s school, she enjoys exploring the vibrant city, strolling along the River Walk and the shores of Lake Michigan. As a member of the Historic MKE. Inc, an historic preservation organization, she delves into the history of the city.
