Last week we returned from our latest 'Classic Volcanoes' of Italy trip 🇮🇹 We had a fantastic time seeing geological and archaeological sites in the Naples area before taking a ferry down to the Aeolian Islands and Sicily. It was a great trip which took us to five of Italy's active volcanoes - Vesuvius, Stromboli, Lipari, Vulcano and Etna, with other stops of geological interest along the way.
Here are some of the our favourite photos, with captions, from our nine days in Italy 📸

We have just completed the first part of our 'Classic Volcanoes' tour of Italy 🇮🇹 and the group are right now setting sail on the overnight ferry from Naples to the Aeolian Islands for the next part of the trip! In the early hours of the morning, the ferry will pass Stromboli, which is the group's destination on Sunday! However, they will arrive on Lipari later tomorrow morning, with lots of geological sites to see there first. So far, the Naples area has provided some outstanding geological and archaeological sites for the group to enjoy: Campi Flegrei, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Pompeii.
Here are some photos of the highlights of the trip so far📸

While one GeoWorld Travel group was exploring Iceland recently, we have also had another group exploring the rather different geological landscape of Southern Namibia! The 'Diamonds, Canyons and Fossils' trip, led by our excellent Namibian guide, Nicole, is being run for the first time and it will conclude back in Windhoek in just a couple of days time. Nicole and the participants have been sharing some photos with us (thank you!) and here are a few of the best - it looks fantastic!
We will be running the tour again in 2026, so if you would like to join this wonderful trip of geological discovery, then please let us know. Details of the itinerary can be found via the link in the comments.

Our Scotland 2024 trip has begun! The first touring day was today, and the first stop was Siccar Point. Siccar Point is regarded by many as being the world's most important geosite because it is here in 1788 that James Hutton stared into the abyss of geological time and the science of geology was born.

On Saturday we completed our 2024 England and Wales trip! After our previous, mid-trip post, we travelled further into Wales and visited many great geological sites in Wales and the Welsh borderlands. We visited the type areas for the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian periods, we visited industrial World Heritage Sites and we enjoyed the wonderful mountainous scenery. There was even time to search for a few of our own trilobites! Here are the highlights of the second half of the trip.
If you would like to join us on future trips, please do get in touch. We hope to be able to announce dates for a repeat England/Wales trip in 2025 very shortly...

Our England & Wales tour is underway! James met the latest group of GeoWorld Travellers at a Heathrow Airport hotel yesterday and they set off this morning. First stop was the iconic site of Stonehenge, followed by a guided tour of the fantastic The Etches Collection museum, by Steve Etches himself. The day then concluded with a visit to Kimmeridge Beach on the Jurassic Coast before heading to tonight's hotel, a short distance from Corfe Castle. Tomorrow, the group will return to the Jurassic Coast for three more days exploring this most geologically interesting of World Heritage Sites. We look forward to sharing more photos and updates with you as the tour progresses!

This time last week, we returned to Frankfurt at the conclusion of our "Volcanoes & Famous Fossil Sites" tour of Germany. We had a fabulous eight days exploring the world-class fossil sites, volcanoes and meteorite impact craters. We visited no less than four Lagerstätten (sites of exceptional fossil preservation) and had the opportunity to search for our own fossils in some of these localities. We enjoyed visits to a number of excellently presented museums to further add to our knowledge of the field sites on our itinerary. Towards the end of our tour, we spent some time in the Eifel area and visited the type area for maar volcanic craters. As well as these geological highlights, we also enjoyed viewing the cultural artefacts from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura, as well as visiting the caves themselves. As always, there were many, many highlights! Here are some of our favourite photos from the trip...
We will be running this trip again in 2025, so if you would like to join us, please get in touch!

Earlier this week we completed our second tour around Scotland this year. Some of our guests then continued on to Shetland for a 4-day tour of the islands with our colleague, Robina.
As we are preparing to lead a 6-day trip around South Wales next week, we haven’t had a chance to finish editing the photos from the latest trip, so here is a video of James at Fingal’s Cave back in May!
A brief overview of the geology of Loch Coruisk
We’re halfway through our Scotland tour and today we were fortunate enough to have a breezy but sunny day for our boat trip to Loch Coruisk. In this video, James gives a brief overview of the geology and you can see the stunning scenery for yourself - a truly amazing place!
We’ve also seen Siccar Point, the Highland Boundary Fault, Loch Ness, Hugh Miller’s Cottage, the Lairg meteorite impact site, the world’s first identified thrust fault (at Knockan Crag), 3 billion-year-old rock, the world’s largest boulder and the Corrieshalloch Gorge. And we still have 3 days to go…!
We’ll be back in June with another group and again in 2023.
Geology in Wadi Al Kabir, Muscat, Oman
Here's another video from our recent trip to Oman. This is from the final day of the tour and shows some really important geological features right in Oman's capital city, Muscat.
If you'd like to read more detail about the whole trip, we have just published the trip diary here: https://geoworldtraveldiaries.com/2022/04/07/oman-2022/
Al Ayn Beehive Tombs and a former atol
Another video clip from our recent #geology tour of #Oman Here we see the Al Ayn Beehive Tombs #worldheritagesite and an incredible geological feature: a mountain that was once a submarine volcano with a coral reef on top of it, in other words an atol, that was obducted onto Arabia with the Semail ophiolite.
Edicarican aged stromatolites, uncomfortably overlain by Permain aged beach sediments!
Oman's Snowball Earth deposits
A short video about Snowball Earth glacial deposits and the tropical capped carbonates that immediately overlie them.
The Moho in Wadi Al Abyad
We got back from Oman just over a week ago and while there made several short videos, here is the first:
A great #geology day on the #isleofskye with the theme being #dinosaur trackways and the largest mass movement landslide in Britain. The video shows a sauropod🦕 trackway at Duntulm. It was discovered in 2015 and is 170 million years old. We also saw dinosaur prints at Brother's Point and An Corran and had a guided tour of the Staffin dinosaur museum by Dugie Ross. At the Quirang we saw Trotternish landslip where a 2km long block of Paleogene lava has slipped down on faults in the weaker #jurassic sediments beneath.
