Shimokitazawa, affectionately known as “Shimokita” by Tokyoites is a small, but very popular town only 5 minutes from Shibuya, and a few more minutes to Shinjuku by train. Like Harajuku, Shimokitazawa is known for it’s fashion and youth culture, though if Harajuku represents the sometimes bizarre fashion of the Japanese High School girl, Shimokita represents her big brother or sister, who have rea
l tattoos, drink hard liquor and sleep in their leather jackets. Also known as “Theatre Town” due to it’s many live music venues and small theatres, Shimokitazawa is one of the best places to check out some of those zany Japanese bands you have heard about, but don’t know where to find. With it’s small unorganized roads not quite wide enough for cars in many areas, it is the perfect place for walking. The abundance of unique and second-hand stores, cool cafes, bars, old style Japanese pubs and eateries in a village type atmosphere is a refreshing change from the densely crowded areas of Tokyo, only a few minutes train ride away. Prices are generally cheaper than in busier parts of the city in Shimokitazawa which is another reason this area should be on the must visit list. Many university sudents live and socialize in the area, and the retailers are aware that prices have to be low to get the thrifty punters entering their doors. This page is for visitors to Shimokitazawa. What the hell is “Ojiya?” I thought and realized it’s another word for “Zousui” which is a type of rice porridge. Usually it’s served at the end of a meal with cooked rice added to a pot of nabe. At Bio Ojiyan Cafe Shimokitazawa, Ojiya has been elevated to a main dish and is just awesome. Choose your toppings and enjoy your meal in a hip, very cozy cafe just outside of Shimokitazawa’s west exit. I had the crab and toasted mayo, my friend had natto! 😆

Check out these skewers from Tori O! Veg wrapped in pork belly! Tori O is on the classier side of your normal yakitori shop, super clean and spacious. Excellent menu and everything presented beautifully on Japanese pottery. One of the only yakitori spots that you can order wine and champagne at as well!

Hishimo, a pakuchi lovers paradise. Right on Shimokitazawa’s ichibangai, almost every dish at Hishimo features south East Asian spices and pakuchi, derived from the Thai word for coriander, cilantro or Chinese parsley.
The parsley root tempura was a first for me and a delicious surprise!

Rikimaru Toho: Tokyo Manga Man
Here is the video we shot of Tokyo Manga Man Rikimaru Toho last weekend. Riki is a professional manga reader and has been performing in Shimokitazawa and Inokashi park in Kichijouji for many years. He has comics for all ages though also reads adult comics. This time he reads an X-Rated manga and although we stop filming before we get to the really naughty bits it's not for the kiddies! Seafood in Shimokitazawa
This weekend is one of six weekends a year that seafood vendors from Iwate prefecture set up shop in the street near the North exit of the station. We took this video today though the food stalls will be open again tomorrow ( Sunday 7th ) so drop in to check it out if you have the chance. The seafood stalls will be back again on March 2nd if you cannot make it this weekend. Enjoy the movie!

Shimokitazawa Takoyaki
Invented by a street vendor in Osaka in 1935, Takoyaki is a popular take away dish made from octopus in batter with ginger and green onions brushed with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver (aonori) and shavings of dried bonito (katsuobushi).
