A cluster - like village structure is
something quite typical for some areas of
Bulgaria, especially in mountainous regions. Such is the case with the area of the central Balkan mountains.

If we revert time back a few centuries, after the fall of the country under the Ottoman rule, the area was almost completely uninhabited.

It was, on the other hand, located where an important trading route was crossing the mountain. Many refugees from around the country fled the region and began making their living by raiding the caravans and hiding in the mountains.

It then became such an enormous inconvenience for the Sultan, that he was forced to give the region special rights. Therefore, it became the only region of the empire, with
entirely Christian population, that was
allowed to carry weapons.

People there were also free from most taxes, while in return they were supposed to protect the passages.

This made even more people settle there and villages were formed by the principle of little clusters of close family relatives building their houses together. They were, and are nowadays, also called ‘mahali’.

Right after the liberation, the region lost its special status. As it is unsuitable for farming and main routes were rearranged, many of these curious mountain settlements were completely abandoned.

This case study resulted in an intervention, that brought life back to the village, even though just for a night...
