This small town in Veracruz is over 500 years old!
Hernan Cortes and his men from Spain trekked through it back in 1521.

Xico (Hee-Koh) is a recognized Pueblo Magico for its narrow cobbled streets and old buildings.

It is located less than 30 minutes from the capital city of Veracruz state.

Make sure to check it out when you visit the state of Veracruz.

Ah, the steamy tropics of the city of Veracruz. Today (end of May) it will reach a high in the mid-90s during the day.

At night it cools down a bit and sometimes you can feel a warm refreshing breeze coming inland from out at sea in the Gulf of Mexico.

This is the time to head into the historic center of the city where the locals and Mexican visitors go. With many outdoor restaurants and lively music being played, it is the place to enjoy a meal, a drink, good conversations, and the tropical ambiance of this century's old port city.

Nothing fancy here. It's just authentic gulf coast living at its best!

When asked if they know where the state of Veracruz, Mexico is on a map, the vast majority of international travelers most likely don't have a clue.

And those that do know probably think the climate in all of Veracruz is one of high tropical heat and humidity.

The answer is . . . . Yes and No.
The correct answer is, "It depends."

It depends on which part of the state you are referring to.

Sure, down by the Gulf of Mexico coast, it is an area of steamy tropics, especially in the summertime.

However, in these pics, you don't see palm trees, beaches, and sand.

If you go to the western edge of the state, you hit the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountain range.

There you discover a barren landscape in a very high altitude; way above the tree line. Think over 10,000 feet up.

So it is safe to say, "The state of Veracruz has its Highs and Lows."
High mountains / Low coastal regions
High temps / Low temps

If you get hungry while on a road trip in the USA, you can make a quick stop at some fast food joint.

If you are on a road trip in the Mexico state of Veracruz, in certain areas, you can stop on the roadside for quickly slurping down several freshly caught oysters.

The good news - your bill for the oysters will be a heck-of-a-lot-less than a burger, fries, and a drink at Mickey-Ds.

FOR OUTDOOR FUN, THE MORE ADVENTUROUS MOMS & DADS head down to the Mexico state of Veracruz with their kids to swim in natural pools below waterfalls, drive up and over tall sand dunes on ATVs (kids under 16 are the passenger rider), and hike in machete-cut trails through natural tropical jungle.

This Spanish guy has been to Veracruz.
What about you?

FYI: Hernán Cortés and his band of several hundred men landed on the shores of Veracruz in 1519. He formed an alliance with the leader of the Totonacs who lived there. Then in less than 2 years, these foreign invaders went on to conquer the mighty Aztec empire and all of Mexico.

Spain then began to build cities and towns (in the likeness of the ones back in Spain) all over Mexico and ruled it for some 300 years.

You can learn about the history of the beginnings of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico in the state of Veracruz and actually visit the places where Cortes landed.
