The farewell shot for Birdsafari Sweden's sucessfull trip to Vietnam. Scaly, Red-tailed and Golden-winged Laughingthrushes, White-throated Wren-babbler, Grey-crowned Crochias and other endemic birds in the bag.

Är någon intresserad av att följa med till Sulawesi och Halmahera oktober 19 - november 07, 2024? Dessa paradisöar är mycket rika på endemiska fåglar - under resan 2023 kunde vi glädjas åt ca. 140 arter som endast finns på dessa två öar i den Indonesiska arkepilagen.
Om det låter intressant sänder jag gärna program och reserapporter

Det finns 4 arter med kronduvor (Crowned Pigeons) på Nya Guinea, 2 på den östra delen - Papua, och två på den västra delen - West Papua.
Jag hoppas att vi kommer att stifta bekantskap med de två som finns på West Papua under resan; Northern Crowned Pigeon som vi hoppas se i Malagufuk och Victoria Crowned Pigeon (fotot) som bl.a. ses runt Nimbokrang.

En fråga; Jag kommer ihåg från barndomen att Skansen höll paradisfåglar i början av 1960-talet. De fanns i anläggningen som senare togs över av Jonas Wahlström och Skansen Aqvariet. Det var upptäcktsresanden Sten Bergman som hade plockat dit dessa. (han klagade bl.a i Hylands Hörna på hur Skansen skötte dessa paradisfåglar fåglar) Jag har ett svagt minne av att Broman även givit Skansen några levande kronduvor som sprang omkring i en bur - Stämmer setta, någon därute som kommer ihåg?

The Northern Cassowary is the most spectaculare of the three Cassowary species on Papua New Guinea.
It was first described by Blyth 1860 from a life specimen kept in Calcutta.
The range of the Northern Cassowary is restricte to West Papua, mostly the northern part.
One of the best places to see this huge, dramatic bird is around the village Malagufuk on Vogelkophs peninsula - the wester-most part of West Papua. Around this village many other fantastic birds can be seen; Birds-of-Paradise, Sicle-bills, Western Crowned Pigeon just to mention a few. Hopefully we will see them all around the village during our stay there next winter.

When the first skins of Birds-of-Paradise - BOP) appeared in Europe, brought there by the Portugese East-India sailors in the 1500:th, they had no wings or feet. Thus it was thought the birds must live in Paradise since they had no need for feet to pearch nor need of wings to fly - thus the name; Bird of Paradise. They didn´t understand the skins were used for cermonial purposes in the dress of the native Papuans who had cut the unneccesary parts off.
The photo is of a Red BOP. It has a very limited distribution to the small island of Waigeo (and some surrounding islands) outside the western edge of New Guinea.
This is one of many BOP´s we hope to connect with during the upcomming trip to Western Papua next winter. If you are interested to know more, send me a PM.
