We love all the old carriage houses that are detached or attached to many of our historic homes. A casual glance tells you it’s a garage but look closer and you can see the old hardware and styling.

Today was the most gorgeous spring day in the Albany Monteith Historic District and all over town! We are loving all the spring blooms.

There’s nothing like original hardware to add historic charm to a house! We spotted these unique glass k***s with brass at an Albany house that was built in the 1940s.

This repair project is at a house in one of our historic districts. The support beam looks almost half gone!

You can see all sorts of information about our past by looking at architecture. This house is in the Hackleman Historic District and has a built-in carriage house. These spaces were used for horses, buggies and wagons; and later were used for cars.

Has anyone ever seen this kind of construction? This small cottage is being remodeled nearby; the walls are made of 4-foot framed panels that are bolted together.

The snow lends a magic to our historic homes! This bungalow is about four blocks away from Maple Street. It is famous for its craftsman style and for the old-growth wisteria vine across the front.

(If you are walking today, you MUST use microspikes or similar; it’s very slick.)

My cousin Jerry gave me this vintage Santa this weekend. Have you seen one like it before? The string at the bottom pulls down and a music box plays Silent Night. How charming!

Do you recognize this art? These are pieces of salvaged flooring, old linoleum. This pattern had nursery rhymes; we’ve also seen some that had printed games on the flooring such as a checker board.

These are in the basement of the Bungalow.

This small 1940s cottage on Maple Street was painted last month. It takes a certain dedication by homeowners to maintain these old houses, and it certainly is gratifying. Very charming!

Who has seen the Naked Ladies this week?! The Amaryllis Beladonna comes up from the earth with just a bare stalk and out comes the most beautiful pink flower. Truly stunning!

The Bungalow is going more planet-friendly with laundry detergent strips. We’ve been testing this type of product since last year and it is very effective. And the best part is the packaging—paperboard! All recyclable.

We went on Albany’s weathervane tour this evening. Who knew there were so many! This photo shows a horse and buggy weathervane that sits atop the turret on an 1885 Queen Anne Cottage in the Hackleman Historic District. The owner reports it is original to the house and was a symbol of the doctor who lived there at the time.

We’ve spotted some amazing asiatic lilies this summer… these white ones are huge and smell so beautiful! (Chubby baby foot for perspective.)

This has been one of the prettiest springs. Dare we say, EVER? How about these gorgeous picket fence roses on a cottage gate, about two blocks away from the Bungalow? So charming!

We talked about the irises the other day much to the chagrin of the cottage peonies that thought they were the prettiest! If you happen to have a border of peonies and irises together, mmwah! We love them all. 🥰

All over the neighborhoods, front porches and trellises are daydreaming of perfect purple wisteria. We found this beauty in the Hackleman Historic District.
