It’s important to pay attention to your child’s symptoms. Very often, if they are chronic, it could signify something more that just a physical ailment. Seek out professional help and begin to incorporate mindfulness into your child’s daily routine.

This Monday, 4/8, will be one of Mary and Susan’s favorite groups to host. We will be taking a mindful walk around the Frank Melville Mill Pond that places the Setauket Neighborhood House in such a beautiful setting. The kids will look and listen for peaceful sights and sounds all while taking in the fresh, new spring air. We will also be distributing our rocks with positive messages for others to find. Hopefully there will be newly born swans in the nest and the kids can experience that as well.
If you would like to join us, please call to register before Monday. (631) 974-4909 or (516)946-3495

Something special happens when our groups come together. I’d like to say it’s even magical. The kids are wonderful in that they welcome each other with warm smiles. Kids are always a little apprehensive when they come for the first time. Who wouldn’t be? They are walking into a new situation and really don’t quite know what to expect. But it doesn’t take long for them to be laughing and high fiving each other.
Last month, a new girl joined our teen group. She was one of the apprehensive ones. Her mother told me she was anxious about coming. “Don’t worry”. I told her. “The others are very caring and they’ll welcome her right in”. Well I wasn’t wrong. She came in somewhat timid but bravely joined in the conversation. The others allowed her to speak and she shared that it’s hard for her to make friends. One boy spoke up immediately. “Well you have a friend in me” and the rest enthusiastically nodded in agreement.
This month we learned that they formed a group chat and are making plans to get together over the winter break. They spent 10 minutes making sure everyone was added to the chat and no one was left out. And at the end they gathered for a group hug.

Mindfulness isn’t always about meditation. It’s about being mindful of one another’s struggles and feelings. Our kids demonstrate that to us each month and Susan and I are blessed to witness it.

“It’s critical to recognize that when we react to psychological distress as though it’s a fire that needs to be put out, we frighten our teenagers and usually make matters worse. Reacting instead with the understanding that emotions usually have their own life cycle — coming as waves that surge and fall — sends adolescents the reassuring message that they aren’t broken; in fact, they’re self-correcting.”

A D.I.Y. snow globe full of glitter is an apt metaphor for the emotional chaos of the adolescent brain.

As mental health problems among children increase, the government will try having students practice mindfulness, relaxation and breathing exercises.

Together we can overcome your Anxiety.

08/11/2018

I created this page as an extension of my practice with my clients. My goal was to reach more people and spread positive energy into the world. I will admit that there are times when it is hard. These are the times, of course, when it is needed the most.

I want to acknowledge that life is not just a bowl of cherries. There are times when we all struggle personally, and times when we struggle together as a community, country or world.

I don’t have answers about eliminating pain and suffering. They are part of the human condition. But please know that the cumulative effect of individuals sending out love and light absolutely makes a difference in some way. So please keep shining, in whatever way is meaningful to you. Your unique light is needed today and every day.

When you can’t understand or make sense of the world, bring your attention to what you can do to be your best self. This is where the light is. Then go out and shine brightly. The world needs your light.

Wednesday Wisdom from Winnie the Pooh

How many of you discovered strength and bravery that you didn’t know you had?

The thing is we never know how strong and brave we are until our strength and bravery are tested. I know I’ve had those moments and I’m sure you have too. When you thought you couldn’t take anymore and somehow you did. If you’re reading this then you survived it. There may have been times when you didn’t want to. But you did. You got up the next morning and you did what you had to do. It took incredible strength and bravery, but you did it.

We are all capable of so much more than we realize. When we are challenged (or we challenge ourselves) we are capable of doing or handling more than we ever thought possible.

This isn’t only true in trying times but every single day. What can you do today that takes strength and bravery? How can you gently push yourself to reach new heights? How can you challenge yourself? You can do it! You’ve got this!

Today, remind yourself that you truly are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. You are limitless.

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for my struggles...all of them. Although I would never choose to relive them, I know how I’ve grown through each and every one of them. In every stage of my life, my struggles have forced me to grow in some way.
I think about the hurts that have been intentionally inflicted on me and I recognize that in some way those people were hurting too. I’ve learned that sometimes things can be repaired and sometimes they can’t.
I’ve learned that I can handle way more than I ever thought I could, and through this I’ve developed a greater sense of self worth.
I also recognize that I’ve received many gifts through my struggles as well. Some came in the form a new appreciation for what I had, some were in the form of a person that I met along the way, some were in the form of knowledge, and some I can’t really define but they were felt.
I’ve also learned that some of the hardest struggles are those of the people I love. Watching them struggle was brutal at times. I developed compassion through my own struggles and I felt their struggles too.
I learned that sometimes all you can do is be present with someone and that sometimes that can be enough.
Today I look back and those struggles don’t carry the same pain. I have respect for them in ways I couldn’t at the time...And so I thank them for the lessons they taught me and for making me a stronger, more compassionate person and a better therapist as well.
Today I am thankful for my struggles....
💜 Susan
