I'm bein' followed by a moon shadow! In our nearest town, Sutherland, is the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) where visitors can enjoy a guided tour of our night skies.

Framing the details! De Kruis has been lovingly restored to its former glory and the attention to detail and Karoo authenticity is very evident. Looking out through every doorway is a framed snippet of the surrounding veld, relaxing living spaces and beautifully restored architecture.

Spring is coming! Our veld is sprinkled with out of this world flowers that are a delight to stumble across on a walk. We still have some weekends in August and September available, perfect for a mini break from the hustle and bustle.

Home is where the heart is! Our kitchen really is the heart of De Kruis, especially during these wintery days. The magnificent restored AGA keeps everything toasty and the large kitchen table is the perfect gathering place for delicious meals or a cup of coffee with a curious, feathered friend. The details are perfection; from hand painted tiles behind the AGA, locally sourced slate for the floors, stunning light fixtures, reed ceilings and South African pottery to name a few.

We share our beautiful Karoo space with many four legged creatures; kudu, mountain reed buck, klipspringer, duiker, jackal, baboon and porcupine to name a few. Sometimes we only see the signs they have left behind but sometimes they surprise us with a morning stroll past the pool!

There is nothing like golden hour at De Kruis in the Tankwa Karoo! From start to end, the colours are out of this world. You are spoilt for choice with options for out of this world photos or just sitting on a stoep or deck and taking it all in.

Rock Pools Scramble! There are lots of beautiful trails to explore on De Kruis. Our favourite right now is the Rock Pools Scramble. With the river slowly bubbling down the valley you can slowly meander and wonder at the exquisite rock formations and natural pools created over time. Maybe even go for a quick paddle!

And suddenly it's all yellow!!! After the first rains of the season the veld is sharing these yellow beauties with us at the De Kruis Homestead and surrounds. From the smallest of vygies lining the road to the majestic aloes standing as sentinels we have been blessed with beauty all around us! , , , , , , , ,

So many spaces to relax and recharge! Take a dip in the pool and soak up the sun or take in the scenery on an outdoor daybed. Dine alfresco under the big Karoo skies or gather at the large kitchen table for cosy evening meals next to the AGA. Serenade your fellow guests with a few tunes on the Steinway piano or battle it out with your loved ones with our large range of board games and puzzles. You can cosy up by the fire with a good book or have a nap on our comfy sofas. Found dotted around the land are a few dwellings that give the visitor a look back in time into how the previous farmers lived and used the land, totally remote and cut off from the outside world. We are restoring some of these dwellings to be used by future generations to come but some we are leaving to slowly be taken over by nature and the surrounding veld. , , ,

Part of our goal at De Kruis is to bring the veld back to its former glory. Here is a fabulous example of Berg Klapperbos (Montinia Caryophallacea). The seeds for this shrub were collected in 2021, at the start of the project, and a number of seedlings grown from this initial harvest, were returned to De Kruis when the garden was laid out. How lovely to see them thrive! , , ,
