Beginning a hike at 4 a.m., Your Shot photographer Kester Rey Celestino arrived at these waterfalls just in time to capture the first light of dawn near Fitz Roy in Argentina. https://on.natgeo.com/2HJ6dxw

The visitors center has a constant update of estimates for geyser eruptions. We loved Old Faithful, since we could go on a hike and come back in approximately an hour, and sure enough, we only had to wait a few minutes to see the eruption.

"The famous geyser currently erupts around 20 times a day and can be predicted with a 90 percent confidence rate within a 10 minute variation. Prior to the 1959 earthquake, Old Faithful erupted 21 times per day. It's hot. During an eruption, the water temperature at the vent has been measured at 204°F (95.6°C). The steam temperature has been measured above 350°F! Scientists estimate that the amount ranges from 3,700 gallons (for a short duration of 1.5 minutes) to 8,400 gallons (for a longer duration of 4.5 minutes)."

We were in Yellowstone for approximately 4 days and greatly wanted to see bison. On the 1st day we caught a glimpse of only one bison (we thought they were rare). But guess what?! On day 2 and 3, we saw dozens and dozens of bison throughout the meadows! They were clearly thriving.

"Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. All bison have a protruding shoulder hump. They are social animals that often form herds, which appear to be directed by older females. Yellowstone bison feed primarily on grasses, sedges, and other grass-like plants (more than 90% of their diets) in open grassland and meadow communities throughout the year."

As we stood up close and personal to the waterfall, it felt like the water was thundering past us. We hiked away from the falls to have a better, wholistic view. The rainbow was a welcomed surprise! 🌈

“Cascading from the 590,000 year old Canyon Rhyolite lava flow, Lower Yellowstone Falls is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. These falls are 308 feet high, or nearly twice as high as Niagara Falls."

⛰⛰⛰We felt so tiny viewing the grandiose canyon! What surprised us the most was seeing the steam vents and geyser activity on the canyon walls (MIND BLOWING 🤯 )

Now a bunch of facts:
“The canyon varies from 800 to 1200 feet in depth and from 1500 to 4000 feet in width. Its length is about 24 miles. The upper 2.5 miles is the most colorful section. Hot spring activity has continued through the ages altering the lava rock to produce lovely colors which are largely due to varied iron compounds”

Remember your middle school science books of the rainbow colors of this grand prismatic spring? Well, they are truly a light show for the eyes.
* * * * *
"The vivid colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red; the amount of color in the microbial mats depends on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and on the temperature gradient in the runoff. In the summer, the mats tend to be orange and red, whereas in the winter the mats are usually dark green. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.”
