Rene took us on a hike to the ruins of Hacienda Casa del Frances. It was destroyed in a fire in 2005, and in the 19 years that has past vegetation has taken over. It was quite an adventure, and to us, the scraped legs and bug bites were worth it😊❤️🏝️

We woke up this morning to an email from the airline saying our flight was booked over capacity. It wasn’t a difficult choice to take the travel voucher and stay another day! We walked straight to Panaderia Lydia and got a gigantic cinnamon bun, and spent the day at Caracas with great friends! Life in paradise is good!😍🏝️

A tale of two houses
Everybody loves a good story, right? On the Island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico, Los Cocos and Las Piedras are two amazing, adjacent oceanfront properties with a very special location on La Chata Playa and oh yes, there’s a story there. For 10 years, we had a vacation rental in Ocean City NJ but the season was so short, and I had dreamed of having a place in the Caribbean...in 2011 we became the proud and totally clueless owners of Los Cocos and our Vieques adventure began. I had actually flown to Puerto Rico solo to look at another property but saw Los Cocos and that view and was smitten. I took lots of pictures of all the good parts and somehow forgot to show the crumbling tile on the patio, broken gate and overgrown shrubbery reporting back to hubby that THIS was the one! He’s a great guy and allowed me to put in an offer sight unseen. He held it together really well when a few hours before settlement a “little” piece of the ceiling fell down (we ended up replacing and raising the entire roof and became much less clueless in the process, that story is a real knee-slapper!) Jeff had buyers remorse for an entire year but I was in my element marketing the house and corresponding with guests.
Two years later we had shared our bungalow on the beach with scores of travelers, many of whom became friends. We received so much interest from larger groups plus our own family needed more space than the two bedrooms at Los Cocos provided. Nevertheless, operating
a vacation rental on an island off the coast of another island is challenging to say the least, and when the house next door, Las Piedras came up for sale my husband Jeff said “that’s an exceptional house” and I said “It makes me tired just thinking of that renovation project!” But 6 months after that conversation we sold the property in New Jersey with the short season NOT on the beach and Las Piedras was still on the market, beckoning to us (him) from across the sand. In 2013 we bought the house and spent 2014 renovating it and adding to our list of “only in Vieques” stories! This time I had buyers remorse for a year and HE was leading the way on bringing Las Piedras back to her former glory. And indeed, it was a great space for larger groups and a very unique spot with an extraordinary view that many of you have experienced for yourself. Years passed the way years do until the ugly step-sisters Irma and Maria made an unwelcome visit.
In September 2017 Hurricane Irma missed us by a hair to the North while we held our breath. Then in a one-two punch Hurricane Maria lashed the island and we waited almost two long weeks for news...we were so thankful to hear that both houses came through the storm with no major damage! We lost some palms and a window, the cement table on Los Cocos roof got smashed by a falling palm, and some patching and painting were necessary along with ALOT of yard cleanup but considering the intensity and close proximity of Maria the cement houses and the beach fared well. We always knew “the big one” would eventually come and we now also know that Los Cocos and Las Piedras can weather a category 5 Hurricane...and in the 4 months following have added yet more stories to our “So you wanted to own a house in the Caribbean” tale.
And now, 2018 begins and our tale continues...thanks to all who’ve visited and returned, and in so doing become part of our crazy, amazing story AND if you’ve never been, let’s talk! Vieques just may be the vacation you’ve been waiting for.
