Related to the starfish, the brittle star has five thin arms emanating from a disc shaped body. For years, scientists were baffled as to how these animals detected light and shadows, as they were believed to have no eyes. This remained a mystery for years, until researchers found that the brittle stars could form crystalline lenses that covered their entire bodies. Each lens consists of a single c
alcite crystal, formed from proteins that the creature can produce. These crystal lenses then relay light directly to the brittle star’s nervous system, essentially making the creatures entire body, a single functioning eye. We are Alexa Ciarcia and Brian Laff.
