Living Well with Disabilities Coalition The Living Well with Disabilities Coalition works to bring about system changes necessary to support adults living with physical disabilities.

Persons with disabilities experience 2-4 times the rate of substance abuse as the general population, yet they use treatment services less often. Adults living with physical disabilities, who self-medicate, are at a higher risk of abusing prescription medications, particularly pain-killers. Due to accessibility of prescription medications through formal, informal, and illegal sources, people livin

g with disabilities can develop a dependence, behavioral health consequences, and quality-of-life issues. The Coalition was established in 2008, completed a community assessment, and is currently working to implement a comprehensive strategic plan. Members work to educate persons with disabilities, caregivers, and healthcare providers on the prevalence and consequences of prescription drug misuse/abuse. Members meet monthly develop Coalition goals to this end, keep each other informed of progress on our goals, and share resources. Specific Coalition tasks, such as the development and delivery of targeted messages, are completed with the use of smaller, working task groups.
