Mvuu lodge and camp from Central African Wilderness Safaris are special places for many reasons (location by the mighty (well, quite mellow as it goes past camp) Shire river, Liwonde National Park’s rebirth and reintroduction programme, birds. But the people who work there are the main reason. Resolution: will go back in 2025!
Meet David Mkandawire, one of the most experienced and beloved guides at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde National Park. David’s journey began in 2008—not as a guide, but as a chef in Nkhata Bay, Northern Malawi. His transition into guiding happened unexpectedly when he stepped in for absent guides during a boat safari. The rave reviews from those guests changed his life forever, unlocking a hidden passion for wildlife and storytelling.
For the past 16 years, David has brought the magic of Liwonde to life for countless guests. His knowledge of the park’s ecosystem, combined with his natural humor and storytelling skills, makes every safari an unforgettable adventure. From spotting elusive leopards to narrating the fascinating lives of waterbucks and crocodiles, David’s ability to connect people with nature is second to none.
David says, “Learning is important, and as a guide, you never stop learning.” This mindset has taken him far, including advanced training with Eco Training in South Africa, honing his expertise. Yet, he remains humble, always emphasizing the two-way street of learning between him and his guests.
When asked for his advice to travelers, David’s passion for his homeland shines through: “People mainly focus on the big tourist destinations. Don’t forget about Malawi!”
With David, every safari becomes more than a journey—it’s a story you’ll treasure forever.
