The founding principles of the London School of Dramatic Art continue to remain the essence of what makes our school a stimulating and unique place to train. At the LSDA we encourage team spirit by getting our students to work as an ensemble with directors and crew. The acting profession is often a collaborative endeavour and part of the training is to prepare students for the demands of professional work in the theatre and in TV or film as a member of a cast.

We believe actors need to take risks, so our teaching is designed to develop courage and trust amongst our students. We encourage individuality and nourish each student’s talent. Our students are taught approaches to acting that promote and strengthen their awareness of themselves and their emotions that support the creation of compelling and authentic performances.

The LSDA admits only a limited number of students each year to maintain a close-knit learning environment where we come to know our students individual needs. We believe this sets the right scene for growth and development of an actor.

We are the meeting point between the traditions of the past and the talent of the future, seeking out and supporting the musicians today whose music will move the world tomorrow.

From pre-school to post-doc, our students come here from more than 60 countries. We challenge them to find their own voice, take risks and push boundaries. Simon Rattle, Felicity Lott, Elton John and Harrison Birtwistle all learnt their craft here. We are excited to discover who’s next.

Every student benefits from a stimulating curriculum and an ambitious range of concerts and events. Legendary artists come here not just to perform, but to become mentors, friends and musical partners.

A world of music comes to us – and we send music back out into the world. As we enter our third century, our aim is to shape the future of music by discovering and supporting talent wherever it exists.

Music never stands still – and nor will we.

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts opened in 1996 to forge a new approach to performing arts training. It was co-founded by our Lead Patron Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty, Founder, and is housed in his old school, which underwent a multi-million pound renovation to transform it into a state-of-the-art performing arts higher education institution.
Today LIPA is an acknowledged part of the UK's higher education provision for the performing arts, recognised and ranked alongside institutions a lot older. LIPA provides learning for the main skills needed for putting on a show (performers and those who make performance possible), uniquely blending specialist and generic skills.
