Dear coaches and fencing clubs,

As we come to the end of another year we really want to thank you for your support and custom.

For more than a year now we have been planting a tree for every order we receive and we have now planted more than 27,000 trees.

In the past we have often sent out cards at this time of year but this year we have decided to do something a little different; to round off the year we have decided to plant another 3000 trees to tip us over the 30,000 mark for the beginning of the new year. We are excited to see these 3,000 trees join the others and grow into a carbon capturing forest over the coming years.

We are looking forward to all the possibilities that 2023 holds for us and our customers. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that the next year brings you health, happiness and prosperity.

Fencing in the 1924 Olympics ended with a real duel?

The story started in Paris in 1924 and involved an Italian-born, Hungarian coach by the name of Italo Santelli. Kovács, a Hungarian referee, made a controversial decision in a fencing match, siding with France over Italy. An Italian fencer, Aldo Boni, started an argument with the referee and refused to apologise when asked. Santelli was called in as a witness to Boni's outbreak, and the Italian team was forced to resign from the competition.

Once in Italy, Adolfo Cotronei, a journalist from Naples, accused Santelli of speaking out against Boni to remove him from the competition, fearing they would beat his adopted nation of Hungary, who went on to take the bronze at the Games. So, he was challenged to a duel by Santelli's son, Giorgio. Giorgio won the duel by delivering a blow to Cotronei's cheek two minutes in and the honour of the Santelli name was preserved.

The mill in this picture is cutting clamps for our new foil blade slotter. Who wants to see what colours we can get our foils to go if we heat them the same way? 🙋‍♂️

You will have frequently experienced coming off the fencing piste dripping in sweat and red in the face. Essentially, when we use our muscles, we use energy. But believe it or not, it is a very inefficient process and only 25% of the energy is used for the muscle to contract and the rest is lost as....

It's finally time!

Over the last few years, we have been making a number of different sustainable changes behind the scenes from switching to compostable bags, recycling heat in our factory and lots more! We are happy to say all of this work has paid off and by the end of 2021 we will be carbon neutral!

Banning the flick?

Digging through our archives we found a 1993 copy of The Sword, in which a reader writes in to complain about flicking to the back in foil fencing. Stating that there is "no future in the game for small fencers unless the flick is outlawed".

These days the flick is such a staple in modern fencing we have to wonder what it would look like today if the fencing world agreed with the reader. Imagine a world where only one flick per match was allowed or even a fencing match without flicks to the back at all!
