This is the 2nd time Michelle has visited Sable Island with us. The first in 2019 by ship. It's an honour to have her as one of Canada's top artists join our adventures and she's such a joy to be around. Thanks Michelle. Check out her works at https://www.michellegrant.ca/

Parenting on Sable Island NPR. Wonderful photos by Kattuk guide of parents and foals doing their thing on our September 5th visit. We were lucky have many foals born on the island this spring and summer, one as recent as a few weeks ago. All appear to be doing well.

Solitude is something often missing in outdoor spaces these days. When we visit Sable Island in our little group of 7 or 8, we're typically the only visitors on the island outside of researchers and park staff. It's a wonderful feeling to look in all directions and only see wildlife, grasses and waves.

A few photos from our August 31st visit to Sable Island National Park Reserve. We had sunny skies, warm but comfortable temperatures and light breezes, a perfect beach day!

Another wonderful group of guests embraced all aspects of this special place. Huge thanks to them, Sarah with Parks Canada, Zoe with Sable Island Institute for taking time with our group , Debbie with Sable Aviation 44 60 Inc. and The 5K Cafe for the great lunches.

While it's difficult to beat a sunny day on Sable Island National Park Reserve, my prefercence is often the foggy, misty days for photography. I remember during a small ship trip in 2019 with Deb Garside, Michelle Grant, Bev Petit, Darlene, Bev B, Theresa R and others, I exclaimed upon our arrival at 5am "on no, it's foggy!" and I got the look and heard... "Oh Fred.... foggy is GOOD!" and I realised quickly why.

On August 21st this year, we were lucky the fog didn't roll in until after we arrived and gave us a opportunity few visitors get to experience. While the fog at Sable hinders travel at times, it also creates a mystique there unlike anything I've ever expereinced. Photos below are from August 21st, 2024.

Say’s Phoebe on Sable, today, August 30. This western species was first reported on the Island in September 1974 by Ian McLaren. During 1993 to 2023, 5 were recorded, all between August 31 and October 1. However, it’s likely that others have been sighted by visitors and/or researchers. In “All the Birds of Nova Scotia” (2012) Ian McLaren noted that this bird is a rare but regular vagrant in Nova Scotia. Photo Zoe Lucas. Our August 24th visit to Sable Island National Park Reserve was a special one indeed. Our adventurous guests embraced the "wilder" side of Sable at Bald Dune in the sun and wind, using only the plane as a base and its wing for shade.

Big thanks to Sarah at Parks Canada and Debbie at Sable Aviation 44 60 Inc. , Garry Donaldson who led the trip and took such wonderful photos and of course Zoe with the Sable Island Institute for greeting the group and talking about some of the imprtant work her organization does.

Yesterday turned foggy quickly after we landed at Sable Island National Park Reserve. The fog combined with the seaspray from leftover seas from Ernesto made for a very interesting day on the island. It was muggy (to say the least), with very little wind and about 26 degrees celcius. It helped get some interesting photos. Big thanks to our guests who truly embraced all aspects of the island, to Vision Air Services Inc. for getting us there and back safely, Zoe at Sable Island Institute, The 5K Cafe for the deleicious lunch, and of course Sarah at Parks Canada for her assistance with everything.

Please join me in congratulating Sandy Sharkey!

I can finally share my news!

I'm greatly honored to have an Alberta wild horse image gracing the cover of the latest issue of Canadian Geographic .

Almost a year ago, Canadian Geographic offered me a photographic assignment for a story about Alberta wild horses.

The story would be written by journalist Monica Kidd. I had no input into the story itself- I was tasked with providing just the imagery.

But I knew that my good friend Darrell Glover (founder of Help Alberta Wildies Society) had spent a day with the writer, taking her into the back country to experience the wild horses firsthand. As a result, Darrell figures prominently in the article with fact-based defenses of the horses.

There's also beautiful insight from Corleigh Powderface, a forensic anthropologist and Indigenous traditional historian. Her story about the importance of these sacred spirit horses to the Nakoda people brought tears to my eyes.

The future for Alberta wild horses is uncertain; in the interests of balanced journalism, the opinions of wild horse detractors are included in the article. Wild horse advocates are bracing for negative actions that might result from the Alberta government's new 'management framework', created under pressure from public lands ranchers.

For that reason, the timing of this cover story is excellent. Awareness is key to the future for Alberta's historic wild horses and their right to exist in the wilderness as they have for hundreds of years. Much gratitude to Canadian Geographic.

The wild stallion featured on the cover had just battled two other stallions who were vying for his mares. He struck this victorious pose and I was fortunate to capture the moment.

Wild stallions will fight for what's important. It's my hope that we do the same, and add our voices to the protection of these magnificent animals.

This issue of Canadian Geographic is now available on newsstands.

I hope you can pick up a copy!
Thanks everyone!

We had a wonderful group travel to Sable Island on Wednesday, August 7th. After landing, mist and light rian arrived and the group (and guide) embraced the weather realizing what a rare experience is was to visit in those conditions. This trip was led by Garry Donaldson who took some incredible photos throughout the day.
Big thanks to Vision Air Services Inc., Zoe at Sable Island Institute Parks Canada and The 5K Cafe for the awesome lunches.
