Mum & I - Helpful hints for the young at heart 'Mum & I' was inspired by my experiences as someone who works full time, who is also the primary carer of my elderly parents.

Tomorrow is Aged Care Employee Day, so what better reason to thank all the caring professionals who look after the millions of older Australians and those living with disability. To our amazing team – thank you! We truly value every one of you and thank you for your commitment and dedication.

PROUD OF YOU

Today Mum had to go out to go to the bank as she is not confident with internet banking. The thought of going out made her very anxious. As you can see she wore a mask , practised social distancing and had plenty of hand sanitiser. She had many strange looks from people and some remarks about over reacting .The risk of this virus to both my parents is immense.Well done Mum for protecting yourself and others.

Good To Laugh

Challenging times for all. Nothing more important to me than my family, doing everything to keep my family safe. Mum and I decided to have a little laugh (can get a bit tense at times). I am still laughing it was great for Mum and I to have a good laugh together (keeping our distance). It was an obvious choice for Mum, but let’s just say Dad would have chosen differently......

Thank you, Sara Lee Australia!

INVISIBLE
NOT A CHANCE
We hear a lot about and have most likely experienced the invisible treatment whether it be shopping or just asking for information.
Standing front and centre in direct eye contact and we can still remain invisible.
When Mum shops she usually wears something bright ( her ageless style)and when wearing sunglasses usually something eye catching.
We can approach with a smile and pleasant attitude, don't be afraid to ask the person why they don't see you (might not even realise they are doing it ).
For those that don't see us take a little time ,a smile and a kind word doesn't take a lot of time.
Understand that some may be in pain ,or hard of hearing ,their natural frown lines may just make them look unhappy or they may of lost their confidence. A smile and a kind word can make thier day and yours too.

THE SIMPLE THINGS
It just takes a little time to be kind

For those that love the ocean and a swim imagine if you could not enjoy this simple pleasure. For some of the young at heart this is a reality ,alone they are no longer able to enjoy this simple pleasure.Make a difference take an hour from your day and join them for a swim.If you do see an older person at the waters edge stop and chat make sure they are OK.Fortunately Mum is still able to enjoy the water on her own she has invested in a $1.80 noodle and some aqua booties (consistent with mums usual style they are very colourful)

GRANDMA'S CUPBOARD
Why shop with all the choices in Grandma's Cupboard. The outfit worn by my daughter was bought from Germany in the Black Forest region.
Great reason to visit Grandma nothing better than sharing, clothes, smiles, memories and love.
My daughter has been shopping in her Grandma's cupboard for many years, the only currency needed is love.Try it next time you visit the young at heart you might be surprised at the treasures you find and the joy you bring.

Our story

I have been fortunate enough to have worked full-time not far from home and have had exceptional support from my parents. Their support has never wavered and has been unconditional. They have enabled me to pursue a career and bring up my children as a single parent.

Being a single parent with two young children at the time necessitated all of us to live in the same home as an extended family. I’m very thankful every day for everything that they have done for myself and my children.

Now that my children have grown up, I’m very privileged to be a big part of my parents’ life and provide support. Through their journey as they get older, I realised how tough it can be for this age group to go about their daily lives, getting older is not a choice , but there are many ways to make the best of it.

I recognise that other people may not be as well supported by their family for various reasons. So I have created this page to share the experiences and learnings which I hope will benefit others .
