Actual trains on the Underground Railroad!
One fascinating story from our The Black Journey: Black Philadelphia Walking Tour was that of abolitionist William Whipper. Although the term “underground railroad“ is generally used metaphorically, Whipper did in fact use trains. The son of a black servant and her white employer, Whipper owned one of Pennsylvania’s premier lumberyards and used secret compartments built into his railcars to move escaped slaves north. He also used his house at 919 Lombard Street in Philadelphia to house them.

The Black Journey visited Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 on the search for Black history.
I visited the amazing street art in Santurce. We experienced Calle Arturo Schomburg and the amazing Afro-Puerto Rican culture of Loiza. The La Perla neighborhood and Obama sculpture across from the capitol building.
