A scary situation for many RV travelers is when their travel trailer starts to sway a lot behind the tow vehicle.

In fact, this one problem has been responsible for many RV accidents and even deaths on the highway over the years. So here are a couple tips to resolve that problem:

* Sway bars are a great addition for any RVer towing a travel trailer. And don't just accept the factory setting on the sway bar. Instead, follow the directions from the manufacturer on how to adjust it for your particular rig.

* The key to resolving sway is often to slow down. But one of the worst things you can do is to hit the brakes in the tow vehicle to slow the rig. Instead, use the manual setting on your installed brake controller to apply the brakes in the RV first and then when the sway starts to ease off you can slow down the tow vehicle. Then find the speed that seems to prevent sway issues from happening and proceed at that speed.

Sometimes you may have to leave your RV for a day or two, or even longer while you are away on a pleasure trip or taking care of necessary business.

If that happens, here are some tips for making sure that things go well at the rig while you are away:

* Don't forget to retract your awnings while away from the RV. Lots of RVers have returned home to find their awnings broken due to a sudden windy storm that came up quickly.

* Turn off the water at the campground faucet just to be sure that no leaks happen that could damage the RV while you're away.

* Along the same lines, be sure to turn off the water pump if you have been using water from your fresh water tank instead of city water.

* Make sure that any outside items like chairs and grills are stored properly so they don't become flying debris in a sudden violent storm.

A common problem for RV owners is removing bugs that splatter on the front of their RV while going down the road. So here's a few tips on how to get them off easily:

* First be sure to remove them as quickly as you can because their juices can actually harm painted surfaces if left on very long. This is especially true of "love bugs" found on Florida highways.

* Many RVers use dryer sheets, like "Bounce", to remove bugs as it seems to cut through bug residue quickly and easily. Usually it's best to soak them in water first and then use gloves to keep the mess from transferring to you as you clean.

* After removing the bugs be sure to put another layer of wax over the front of the RV as the dryer sheets can also remove wax as it removes the bugs. And wax on the RV helps keep the bugs from sticking on your next trip too.

RVs always have something that needs attention somewhere almost all the time. But many of those repairs aren't very big or difficult.

So it's a good idea to have a smaller handy toolkit to tackle the smaller projects without having to haul out your big toolkit instead.

And this video features a handy little set of tools that I have been using for 5 years in our fulltime RV travels.

A lot of RVers wonder what to do with their RV batteries when they put their rig in storage. Here are the three main choices to keep your RV batteries in good shape when not being used:

* Disconnect the batteries. This can be done by using a disconnect switch if your RV is equipped with one. Or it may call for disconnecting the cables that attach to the batteries. Some suggest that you should also then remove the batteries and store them in a dry, sheltered area too.

* Trickle charge the batteries. If you have a 120 volt electric hookup where you store the RV, there are battery tenders that are available on Amazon that will make sure that your batteries remain in a fully charged state for as long as you want. Just search for "rv battery tender" on Amazon to check out the choices you have.

* If your storage spot has a hookup for 30 or 50 amp service, you could just leave your RV plugged in and let the RV's converter keep the batteries charged.

Whatever you do, make sure that you don't just leave the batteries hooked up with no charge being applied as there are lots of phantom draws on battery electricity that can suck your batteries energy to the point that it can be ruined.

It's getting to be that time of year when many RVers start to store their RV for the winter, especially the folks living up north. So here are a few reasons why you should store it with the slides retracted:

* RVs are generally made to handle the weight of slides being extended for a long time. But strong winds can still bounce the slide and allow water intrusion from rain or snow.

* Leaving the slide seal exposed to the weather also makes it wear out faster. And they can be expensive to replace.

* If the RV is outside in the winter, snow could pile up on the roof adding weight to the sidewall that could cause structural problems with the slide that wasn't built for that kind of weight.

Can you think of any other suggestions for storing RVs safely in the winter? Please post them here now!

RV life presents challenges in some areas that we take for granted when living our sticks and bricks homes. And making ice is one of those challenges.

RV fridge/freezers are just too small to hold much ice and they make it so slowly as well. So what's the solution? This video explains what we did to solve the problem in our fulltime RV travels!

A common mistake made by people buying RVs is to fail to make sure that it is "livable" in a comfortable way.

So while you're checking out the floor plan and the amenities be sure to also sit in the dinette and see how easy it is to get in and out.

Then lay on the bed and see how comfortable it is. Stand in the shower and sit on the toilet. These areas that are notorious for being small and awkward in some RVs.

Check out the TV viewing position too. It's amazing how many RV builders stick the TV in an area where viewing it requires craning your neck in an uncomfortable way.

See how much room is available to get by one another in the kitchen area too.

There are other ways to find out about the livability of the floor plan, but I think you probably get the idea. Just try to imagine yourself and those with you actually living from day to day in the RV. It can help you avoid making a mistake that is hard to resolve after you own the RV.

Since RVs are mobile, they face unique dangers from one area to another. And one of those dangers has to do with your RV's electrical system.

It can be affected by high voltage, low voltage, improper wiring, lightning strikes, and the list goes on.

So there is a clear need for an RV surge protector to guard your electrical system and everything plugged into it. But which one should you choose? This video helps answer that question - https://youtu.be/a6k7JBio0CQ

Just a reminder that periodically it's a good practice to sanitize your RV's fresh water tank. At least on an annual basis.

Water that sits in a tank can develop any number of quality issues that are left behind, including bacterial growth.

So sanitizing the tank helps keep your source of fresh water when unhooked from the city water source, as clean as possible.

Also, whenever you buy an RV, one of the first things you should do is sanitize the fresh water tank because you don't know how long ago the previous owner did it, and in many cases even whether they ever sanitized the tank.

I made a video that explains the process for water tank sanitization and you can view it here - https://youtu.be/OtQG19zu2sg

Sometimes RV fridges just take on an odor that is hard to get rid of. So here are a few things you can use to get rid of those odors after you've thoroughly cleaned your RV fridge:

* Many RVers swear by a combination of baking soda and vanilla. Of course, baking soda is well know for absorbing odors, but the addition of vanilla makes it even better. The recipe is a half cup of baking soda with two tablespoons of pure vanilla extract.

* Unused coffee grounds has been a successful choice for killing odors too. Just pour some in a pan and place in the fridge.

* Charcoal is also well known as an odor purifier. So place a few briquettes in a container and put them in the fridge.

How long it takes to get rid of the odors is not an exact science. And you may have to refresh the odor killer you are using every few days for a while to keep it at maximum strength.

Do you have any other ideas for killing strong RV refrigerator odors? Please post them here now!

Here are a few tips for selling RVs to make them more attractive to buyers:

*Staging works well for RVs just like it does for selling homes. So put some flowers out. Set some places at the table. Use accent throw pillows. Simple things like this can make an empty RV look like a pleasant living space to potential buyers.

*Clean the RV thoroughly inside and out and keep it clean. If the RV looks dirty, that brings into question how well you took care of it in the minds of those viewing it.

*Declutter your RV. If you tend to let things pile up, don't let others see that when they view the RV. Make sure it's not only clean, but tidy as well.

*Take pictures using a wide-angle lens that is capable of showing a good portion of the area you are featuring. Many people use a normal lens that doesn't really reveal much about the RV interior. So back up and get more in the photo. And use a wider angle too. Most cell phones these days have that capability.
